It's glee that should've died, not him

No, because he was the lead actor in one of the greatest TV series of all time rather than a dude from some kids' show.

I generally don't look at RIP threads anyway because I get annoyed watching people compete with each other to prove they're the most empathetic. There's something very crass about it.

It wasn't a kids show actually and this young man's death is no less tragic than Gandolfini's just because he happened to be an actor you didn't 'respect'.
People have the right to express their sympathies without the thread police appearing and having a pop.
We get it, you don't approve of RIP threads, so perhaps instead of coming in and moaning in one and getting annoyed at all the crass, empathetic posters you are so much better than, you should keep out of them altogether.

Back on topic, I wasn't a fan of the show, but any young man checking out at 31 is a tragedy. Thoughts go out to his loved ones, who must be in absolute bits right now.

Sad to hear this of course but Im surprised that a 31 year old is a main character in Glee, how old was his character supposed to be- between 21-24? I know its usual to cast much older looking people for younger roles, but I woudl definitely say some stress over where his career was headed had to be behind some of his torment, theres only so long a man in his 30s can play a fresh faced college goer belting out corny tunes, the same as most of the cast of the show. Post-Glee career opportunities are probably going to be thin on the ground for a lot of them.

    R.I.P

But, do drugs, run the risk of dying.

This is not a tragedy like I've seen posted in other places.

Sure - if it's just a random druggie.

But this guy was rich and popular. So it's tragic.

    Tragic:
Causing or characterized by extreme distress or sorrow.

Hundreds of thousands of people die every day...and very few people are impacted by it. When a regular person dies, it is very tragic for their immediate family and everyone else is largely unaffected.

By definition, the more distress or sorrow caused by the death, the more tragic it is. Someone who is famous dying will impact the lives of millions....assuming people aren't GLAD he's dead, it will be tragic. I'm not a fan of Glee, but news of his death is being reported all over the world. If I died tomorrow from a drug OD - I'd be lucky to get a mention in the newspaper.

The more popular/powerful/famous/influential someone is, the more tragic their death. We value their life more. Princess Diana dies in a car crash and it is devastatingly tragic. I'd argue that her death alone received more media coverage than ALL of the million other automobile accidents that year.

Drug dealers get shot and killed every day...and we mostly don't care.
Solders get shot and killed every day...and we mostly don't care.

Someone kills a popular US president (JFK) and the whole world cares.

So yeah, he was famous and he died - so it is more tragic. More people care, more people are negatively impacted. His life was more valuable than most....so lots of people will be sad.

I mean, boards doesn't just create forums for nothing.

    There's a mustard forum.

Sorry, but someone famous dying because of someone else is tragic.

Someone famous dying because of their own actions is not.

He's such a good role model for people isn't he? Taking drugs.

Better knock all of these (and many more) off your role model list also........

    Steve Jobs,
    Baudelaire,
    Mohammed,
    William Burroughs,
    Robert Louis Stevenson,
    Michael Phelps,
    Usain bolt,
    George Washington,
    Obama,
    Bill Clinton,
    Charles Dickens,
    Arthur Conan Doyle,
    Thomas Edison, Freud,
Ben Franklin................................ and on it goes.

How many of those died as a result of their (illegal and stupid) actions?

This guy will be remembered for drugs.

I don't need to go through what the others will be remembered for.

You said "He's such a good role model for people isn't he? Taking drugs."

    Death didn't come into it.

The role models (to some) that I posted all caned it at one point or another in their lives.
    Some still are caning it.

What led up to Christoper Reeves death?
Was horseback polo illegal and stupid?
Fuckin' dangerous that's for sure............ a lot more dangerous than some drug taking.

    Right, well I meant death.

And I don't think reeves actions are more dangerous than this glee fellas.
    How is polo illegal???

I wouldn't bother. This will turn into some stupid 'well cars kill more people than drugs, should we ban those?' conversation.

Is that not at least somewhat true?

Or should I set up an RIP thread for Donal, the heroin addict that showed people how to use Luas ticket machines?

This form of attempted smartarsery falls down badly in the printed form. You know Corey who, because it's the name of the thread. You need better material

If I am honest I haven't watch an episode of Glee since first series, simple because I lost interest in it. I do know of lots of people both men and women in there twenties who watched Glee because they like it. I have read about a lot of the story line in Glee on the web and a lot of them were to do with issues such as bullying at school and young people struggling with being gay. They always promoted a positive message to young people that they don't have to suffer in silence no matter what there problems were. So, I do think that Glee brought happiness to young people's lives and it also showed them that things would work out for them and they would be able to be happy and that there was no need to take actions such as ending there own lives.
I had read about Cory's struggle in the past with addiction problems and he did try and get help. Whatever happened to the guy. I don't think it makes him a bad person. R.I.P Cory

It isn't.......... neither is drinking a vat of Vodka.
Good chance of getting destroyed though (legally, so it's all right).

Do you remember what did Amy Winehouse in?
I'll give you a clue..... the answer could be in her name, and it's legal.

This guy will be remembered for drugs
He was hooked on painkillers after injuring his back, according to my wife

Though she also said he had a drug problem when he was a lot younger, and I doubt she meant painkillers
