Hit speed bump - leaking oil and smoking engine

Just looking for some advice here.

    Car is an Alfa 147 - 03

OH was driving it this morning. Went over a speedbump and the next thing there was fumes coming out of it. She continued to drive to work (about 5 mins - so not far). Got car towed from there to dealer.

Just spoken to dealer and he's 99% sure its the oil sump
Quoted me €400 for part (ex VAT!!) + labour, so all in about €800.

However, if the engine is damaged then its a write off. He's gonna put more oil in it and run the engine to see if there is any damage.

Do I have any options here? Are the prices he's quoting mad?

Is this something I'm just gonna have to suck up? :(

Shame, as the car never really gave me any grief.
Don't think I can replace it if the engine is knackered.

Smoke may have just been the oil burning off if it leaked onto the exhaust etc..

I have a car a few years ago, the oil filter seal failed and oil sprayed out onto the manifold... plumes of white smoke for a few hundred metres until I could stop... but very little oil was lost.

All you can do is wait and see I guess.

Sounds dear for a sump, I did 2 of them previously, is he getting a genuine or spurious part?

Genuine part. Said its not a stock item so he'd have to order it in.

He suggested I try and source a 2nd hand one, but didn't seem hopeful I could.

If it is a write off I know of a 2.0 147 that a local chap has that he wants rid of as its taking space if you're interested :)

You could try an phone around a few breakers and motor factors to check. Try partfinder.ie also

I'm beginning to think that too.
    Still, damage is done now.

dgt - is there an ad for that motor? not sure if i want to get an alfa again. things like this just put me off them...

i'll have a look at look at partfinder.ie - thanks

I've seen a few people whallop speedbumps and have the car/van they were driving drop its guts over the road right afterwards. It's stupid to have speedbumps so vicious that you have to come to a near halt to get over them.

In fairness this could happen in any car. A colleague of mine did exactly the same thing in a Golf a short while back.

The problem is the driving, not the car...maybe sourcing a second hand spare part for a different brand would have been easier, but the fact stands that she damaged the car due to careless driving. No different situation if she drove into a wall.

As for the speedbumps, it is utterly ridiculous. There are some that require you to hire a sherpa before attempting to climb over, simply a joke. I always think about "what if there's an emergency" when I see these stupidly rough ones.

Get a suzuki Jimny, that will sail over the speed bumps

true. i know its not the car. just leaving a bad taste in the mouth is all.

all this coz of a speedbump. just hard to take right now.

    can't afford it tbh

I forgot to add...don't mean to be patronizing, I myself DID break an engine mount on one of these "himalayan" speedbumps!

I'd go measure the size of the bump and find out what the maximum sizes are. I can't get into my estate with a passenger in my car without destroying my front splitter, car is on factory suspension too. ****ing joke.

There are a few around alright that are way too steep.

I'd be measuring it and checking it meets the regulations, if not I'd be on to the council of the area handing them the bill.

There's regulations now? I thought they specifically avoided making any so it couldn't bite them in the arse.

No ad as it's just sitting in his garden. Dark blue, a few marks and was used until a few weeks ago as the chap who owned it emigrated and left it with him :)

As for the sump, can happen to any car. Just look up TDI smashed sump for example ;)

I'd give don baker in enfield a ring if you're anywhere near. He's an alfa mechanic and breaker and usually has a couple of 147's around for spares. I'm sure the cost would be nowhere near €800 either. Did you get the price off an alfa dealer? no point going to them with a 10 year old car.

Put a speed bump on a bend, put some that damage a car to the point of being dangerous. That's ok.

5 kmph over 50 on the n32 and 2 points and a fine.

Yet again they manage to out do themselves in the most retarded ideas.

" guidelines"? Well they can pay e200 for a carbon splitter they wrecked on me.
