    Is this

a good alternative to using a star fangled nut when installing a head-set?

I don't have the nut inserter tool, and I don't want to pay 20 to 40 euro for one.
I also don't really want to lump my forks to rothar.ie and use theres - helpful though they are.

It'd be for a 1 1/8 steerer tube and a campagnolo style headset.

Any better alternative? The above looks good to me - I'm not that keen on a DIY tool job to be honest.

something like this might be what you're looking for.
there are lots of these on the market by different manufaturers.
The one above may be available elsewhere, at a better price.
The BBB one was the first one, I came across on the CRC site.
The one, that you suggested would be more suited for MTB use, where pressure on the headset would be greater.

    This one is cheaper

I've never used a special tool; gentle thump of a hammer is all it takes.

Have a setting tool if you're in the Cork area you're welcome to borrow it.

A screwdriver that is slightly narrower than the opening of the fork, a rubber mallet, more force than you'd think and a bit of patience is all you need.

Thanks a lot for the replies all :)

I'm not in Cork but thanks for the offer SomeFool.

I think I'll go with one of the compressor adjusters just because I don't want the potential risk of stuffing up jury-rigging in the nut and having to drill it out or get the LBS to fix it on me. Plus, I can re-use the adjuster - so I can self-justify it with another excuse than cowardice ;)
