Tom Youngs hadn't even started a Premiership game at hooker 18 months ago, and he is well worth a starting place

People were calling POM a future Irish captain when he coming through prior to getting his first run of games with Munster, it hasn't started in the last few weeks. Just because the comment has more legitimacy now doesn't mean it wasn't massively over-hyping him back then.

Probably down to the fact that he has captained every team he has ever played in.

    Cool.

    Jordi Murphy for Irish captain!

    :pac:

If Conway or Nagle suddenly start fulfilling some of the many predictions made about them earlier in their careers I don't think anyone could reasonably look back and say that at no time in their careers were they ever over-hyped.

What I read from it was that he meant that if Murphy had the same chances as POM's received he'd be able to show he is the better player. He hasn't gotten the chances yet so we can't tell if that is the case until he does.

EDIT: So by you the definition you're working with it will be impossible to say if that statement is over hyped as its in the 'what if' category that we cant measure whether his prediction can be 'realised'.

    Well...yeah.

But it completely depends on the statement at hand, I suppose. If I say Nagle is the best young Irish prospect, I'd guess you could say I'm overhyping him as he hasn't really shown anything to prove that. But again, it comes to down to whether you're dealing with the "present" or "future". I think making predictions about the future can't ever be measured until then.....

I mean, I don't remember people saying that Sexton was the best young player in Ireland when he was 19/20 (maybe they were, I don't remember it anyway) but there's no doubt he's one of the top Irish players now.

This is a slightly silly debate though. We are actually arguing over the definiton of overhyped, maybe it's subjective?

Murray is pretty lucky to be there, wouldnt say he has been a top 3 scrumhalf in the british isles over the last 12 to 18 months.

Disagree strongly. I think over the past season, there's a strong argument for him being the best. If we're only counting Lions-eligible players. Youngs did come back into form towards the end of the season. Murray was superb last season.

(I know TOD won Munster's player of the season, but for me Zebo was the best, followed by Murray).

18 months ago he wasn't in the top 3 scrum halves in Ireland, however in the last six months he has proved worthy of where he is now and that's what matters.

If you wanna add Danny Care that wouldn't be unreasonable but no one is close to those 4 guys in the British Isles

Murray could legitimately be starting today, and that is a massive boost for both munster and Ireland...

Women's team losing currently to Australia, doesn't look like they'll be able to pull that one back.

I believe their game against China will be live in irb.com

Laidlaw maybe? I felt he was very unlucky not to be selected.

    Unconvinced by what?
That Murrays experience on the lions tour will benefit club and country?
That he's a better player because if it?
That he deserves his place in the squad today?
That he's the sexiest man in Irish rugby since I packed down at 6 in the munster schools junior cup in '98?

Thought Murray did well when he came on today, I've been a critic of his I suppose but he looks comfortable in international rugby now. Would have no issue with him starting next week.

Totally agree, still not a fan of that type of scrum half but he is the best Ireland have and has shown some real improvement on this tour.
Played very well off the bench today.can see him improve further under Schmidt similar to how boss improved under him at leinster.
Potential problem position for Ireland looking better.

    Damning with faint praise.

Although its great to see a lad playing so well even his critics have to come out admit it. It looks like he made a good decision by only going for a one year Munster contract. This time next year, he'll almost be able to name his price to the IRFU.

Which is why I said almost. Hopefully Murray will want to achieve more at Munster before he goes searching for the biggest offer on the table.

Could we keep this thread On topic to the senior men's team? We have separate threads for example for the u20's etc and by all means lets start a thread on the Irish women's rugby team.

It gets confusing if we start mixing various Irish teams into the one thread.

I think Irish fans in general should be pretty happy with what the Irish lads produced on the Lions tour, and it bodes well for the future. Conor Murray in particular should be delighted with his tour and could now justifiably be classed as one of the best 9s in Europe. His progress has been remarkable.

i was a bit surprised Murray got selected but I do think it has made him a better player. I think he looks a lot more assured in himself. Heaslip needs a serious bit of competition for his place at Leinster and Ireland. He just looks like he is playing a little bit too complacently.

I am fascinated to see what Schmidt does with the Irish backrow. It is true that their is no real competition at 8 at the moment. SOB has to be in there somewhere of course.

The other area that intrigues me (as I'm sure it does most Irish fans) is the midfield, with Darcy & BOD maybe having 1 season at most left. Schmidt does not want to start 2015 trying to find a new midfield combination. He is going to have to take some risks to give players exposure to test match rugby.

I really thought the Lions tour would finally bury the Heaslip thing. It seems we're cursed to forever contend with it.

I dont think any player should be immune to discussion. Heaslip had a good but not brilliant tour. He is very hardworking, but Faletau really provided go-forward for the Lions today. I think it would be good for Ireland to have more than 1 viable option at 8 - who knows when Heaslip might ship an injury.

Its hardly an unfair assessment. He has had little or no serious opposition for his jersey at both levels. He was very good towards the end of the Leinster season but I do feel there needs to be someone else challenging to get the best out of him.

As for midfield, we really need Luke Marshall to overcome his concussion issues in the near future (and then to stop trying to stop 130kg opponents with his head). Outside centre is going to be a major challenge to whoever takes over once the great one retires.
