Although not a great engine reliability wise, they deliver 30mpg around town and 40mpg on a motorway spin which is not bad for a 1.8 petrol at all.

The v40 / s40 GDi were sold with leather and on board computer etc as standard so expect plenty of toys with the 1.8i .

Drove to Waterford from Kells and back at the weekend in one, around 300 miles of motorway. Averaged 47mpg according to the computer. I reset it at the start. 222000 miles with no engine trouble (had to get the throttle body cleaned twice @ €20 a pop). Throttle position sensor starting to act up recently though. Has been a great car. Averages 39mpg for me on crappy roads.

25C and more from Friday for at least a week is what they say. How about:

€2k asking price. NCT 04/14, 4 brand new tyres, belt done!

    "WITH EVERY CONCEIVEABLE EXTRA"

If I listed every extra that car is missing I would have a list approximately 3 pages long. That e38 is bog spec even in engine terms, still a great deal but theres lots of equipment not on that car.

    I know right?! ;-)
I unfortunately find myself swimming in economically embarressed seas at the moment, was wondering whether anyone had a handle on reliability on those years/makes, or whether the ads raised any red flags, I know at that price range you're planning explodey-engine Russian roulette....:-)

Well, dgt posted a 01 Nissan maxima with 90,000 miles for €650. I would look at that before any of the ones you posted, for value at least. A Mazda 626 of the same vintage will have an ultra reliable engine. They pop up here the odd time

The first car on your list, the 00 avensis is a good bet if you want a car with very good build quality and reliability. 98-00 Avensis have the ultra reliable 4e-fe engine so you will have nothing to worry about in that regard.

As for the price, it's not as over priced as people make out. Provided the car is in good condition if you got it for around the 1k mark you wouldn't be doing to badly Imo.

+1 for the avensis. But the mondeo seems reasonably priced.

    Do they really burn oil?
My avensis doesnt and it is well over 100K miles at this stage.

The 4e fe engine burns little to no oil. It is not to be confused with the vvti unit that came after it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 890 ✭✭✭dh0011

mine is a vvti and doesnt burn oil. Oil burning question is about the mondeo

There's nothing to be embarrassed about dude. Many of us are financially a lot worse off than we were before. Some of us drown in a sea of self pity (or worse), others embrace the fact that we can still drive a half decent car for very, very little money indeed :)

being as non biased as i can be the petrol mk4 golfs are soft ****heaps as are the 1.8 petrol mondeos.

edit : that levin is fantastic value for money! :)
