So I had a second crappy monitor lying around so I thought id try hook it up and use it as a second monitor. Ordered a HDMI-VGA cable because the DVI on my GPU was already taken up by my first monitor, and when I tried this new cable out its not working. Tried restarting computer etc to see if it would detect it, but no luck at all. Anyone got advice?

A HDMI - VGA cable won't work because it doesn't convert the Digital signal provided over HDMI to an analog signal which is needed for VGA. You would need a cable that would convert the signal but they are pretty pricey.

if you bought something like this chances are it won't work as they don't actually convert the signal from digital to analogue

If it is something like this though they generally work as they do convert the signal to analogue (they don't work in reverse in case anyone is wondering i.e. you can't use it to convert vga to hdmi)
