Mother says her son will be a very good doctor. Well there's our answer for our hospital waiting lists. None of this aptitude nonsense, just ask all the mammies in the land what do they think their sons will be good at.

Well I mean, he got grinds and everything! And he's able to learn stuff off by heart! Sure he'd make a GREAT doctor.

Personally think that aptitude tests are a much better way of getting a realistic view of person's intelligence. Currently studying for a GMAT and even though the questions themselves arent an issue its actually more testing that any leaving cert/college exam where you just have to regurgitate information

You have to answer very difficult questions instantly..

"A well known RTE broadcaster has landed on your operating table, and his leg is sitting on the floor beside you. What do you do?"

Yep it is very annoying when someone takes a place in science and are just keeping the place warm til they get into medicine. Happened in my degree - physiology was a specialisation that was really hard to get into. There were at least 3 people that got in, and I knew people who had just missed getting into it and so went into something else. Come October those 3 people had been accepted into Medicine in England or something, and the 3 people that had missed out, it was too late (by college rules) for them to get into physiology.
