Chaffinch nestling on ground.

There's a baby chaffinch (definitely not fledged) that must have come out of it's tree and is being fed by it's parents on the ground. Normally I'd just leave any young birds I see well alone. However, the ground is a public bit of university lawn, and it will get run over with a lawnmower/trampled by schoolkids/eaten by a cat or dog within the next day or two. It's not exactly hidden and easily seen from the path.
There's no way I can reach to put it back up in the tree it came from - I might be able to put it somewhere safer in the bushes nearby, but I'm not sure how far the parents will look for it if I do.

Would you recommend I just leave it to it's fate, or will it be better off if I move it somewhere?
