the rest just makes no sense but I will type slowly for you okay:

You mean you didn't understand this simple prose?

Does every white male in Ireland have the same chances of getting into Trinity, or getting into Portmarnock golf club, or getting into private school or studying law, or getting a legal apprenticeship, or participating in real power and privilege .

Really? I know you don't seem to be able to write grammatically but reading it should be simple enough?

We white males need to fight back back against these white males, we are on the verge of civil racial war in this country and people can't even see it.

In the 1990s I was turned down for 2 jobs in the UK because their equal opportunities policy required applicants from marginalised or ethnic minorities. My argument that their policy marginalised me for being a white male European fell on deaf ears.

Have you ever been discriminated against fro being a man?

I was house hunting last weekend and I went to view a bedsit in Terenure. I was the only guy at the viewing which was attended by 5-6 others, all who were female. The landlord made a ridiculous assumption when he was speaking to me that I was a heavy drinker.

He said to me that 'this house wouldn't be the type of place for your mates to come over and drink cans.' I assured him I didn't drink which he just smiled as though I was lying.

Is there an aspect of Irish society which discriminates against single Irish men? If I was a different nationality in that instance do you think the guy would have raised concerns about the stereotype associated with another nationality?

I've been coming across a lot of this while house hunting, 'females only' or competing with a majority of foreigners for a room only to be let down at the last minute and the place going to someone else.

Some Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandella sh1t right there.

Landlord really got it wrong there when he assumed you were a bit of craic.

I'd imagine the shorts, wellys, mullet and original "I shot JR" t-shirt all played their part.

Being white and male gives you a massive amount of privilege, don't pretend it makes anything more difficult for you.

I suppose that's why they have the highest suicide rate of any demographic.society has a very low opinion of young white males imo.

Funny that if the thread was titled black or foreign male discrimination you'd have gotten a lot more than 70 replies.

How is it stupid. If a Indian single male went there and was told this is not the type of house where we cook curry all day or some other typical sterotype and they posted here most people would saying its a disgrace.

Just cause you are white and middle class, doesnt mean your any less of a terget for peoples bias and assumptions.

Why do travellers have to be mentioned on every thread?

You are not even following any counter argument are you? You've been told about white privilege all your life and you merely repeat the mantra.

Just so we're on the same page: you're being sarcastic, right?

Young males are typically more trouble than young females for landlords.

Not reading through 6 pages but this is completely wrong. Young Males just aren't as easy for landlords to bully..............typically

I'd say there was more to this than you being a white male.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's possibly one of the most stupidthings ever said, but I doubt that was the reason, maybe there was something about you he didn't like (maybe you just reminded him of his alcoholic nephew or something)

Anyway, you think it's tough being white male, try being a black woman, now THAT can be tough at times...

Being white, male, middle-aged and Irish is a distinct disadvantage when looking for a job in Ireland. Recently, I attended a job interview and the interviewer kept referring to her staff as ' the girls ' - what am I doing here? Go down to your local supermarket, pub, restaurant or hotel and see how many middle-aged Irish males are working there - none of course! I rest my case!

This is part of the problem. Someone suggests white males can get a raw deal too sometimes and people are dropping their monocles in disgust.

Perhaps you need to brush up on your interview technique and retrain for the skillsets now required by employers.

I would have assured him I didn't have any mates, then asked him if it was the type of place you could sit in the dark and sharpen knives.

Why is white in the title? I can see your point in being feeling discriminated against for being a male but I don't see how being white put you at a disadvantage while searching for a place to rent.

If you think you are discriminated against, try being black for a week.

Maybe because they are working in better-paying jobs? Men in Ireland still earn more on average than their female counterparts, you know.

I would agree that in certain areas of retail you're at a distinct disadvantage if you're a bloke. I applied for a summer job with Boots recently, but I knew damn well my penis would probably be a significant barrier in securing the position. Judging purely from personal experience it seems a good deal easier for chicks to get the kind of jobs suitable for students in full-time education. But then, when it comes to higher-ranking management jobs, men are at an advantage again, statistically speaking.

A lot of what Duggy says is correct. "White privilege" isn't this overarching thing that applies equally in every country. In America and to a lesser extent, the UK, it is definitely a relevant concept due to the long history of slavery, discrimination and segregation. In Ireland however, we don't have that dynamic of a large black minority that was traditionally oppressed. Is there racism? Definitely, but it's usually directed toward migrants in general; including white Poles and Lithuanians as well as Travellers. If you want to look at the biggest divide in Irish society, it is class. Where someone was born, the jobs their parents do, the schools they attend, the expectations they're raised to have and the connections their family has are of far more relevance than skin colour in Ireland.

Because AH is like 9-12pm midweek TV3. It has to include in no particular order.
    The IRA.
    Travellers.
    Crime in general.
    Welfare Fraud.

While what happened to you was sh*t; I don't think the fact that casualised, low-paid and part-time work is dominated by women constitutes "male discrimination." That's missing the wood for the trees there.
