I may not agree with Senator Norris's world view, but I'd wish him a recovery not least because he is an excellent an example of how a Senator can be.

What a juxtaposition, David Norris and all that other muck we are having to put up with right now.

    Get well soon.

I wonder why he keeps repeating: "which I contracted from tainted drinking water while I was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994".
Drinking tainted water is just one of the ways of contracting this. How is he so sure? Did he bring back a vial for analysis?

I'll ask you again. What are you insinuating? And no weasel words, please.

My mother caught hepatitis (A, I think) from tainted drinking water... And tbh, she's about the least promiscuous and most innocent/naïve person I've ever come across. I've anecdotes to back that up :P (but they aren't going on here!) And it tends to be quite obvious where you catch it. Chat with the doc. "Any x, y, z etc etc etc recently?" No. "Any foreign travel recently?" "Yes" "where to?" "[insert still developing country here as most of eastern Europe was back then]" "Did you drink the tap water?" "Yes" "That'll have been where you caught it so". Like, it doesn't take Sherlock holmes to figure out these things. The cancer is probably as a result of damage done by the hepatitis.

    Anyway, get well soon Norris

Years ago in Dublin I was en route early in the morning to an interview and managed to dip my tie in coffee. Senator Norris, after some chuckling, gave me his upon learning that I was headed to an interview.

Legend. Here's to a speedy recovery.

Good job you didn't spill it on your lap

I'll rephrase that. He was rejected by the voting public in favour of Michael D.
Only in the sense that Mary Robinson was twice rejected as a TD, being beaten on one occasion even by Liam Lawlor himself.

It doesn't say anything significant about the esteem in which Mary Robinson is or was held.

I think Norris is a fantastic guy but I think he'd be wasted in the Aras. As great as the pair of them are, I didn't vote for him, nor for Michael D for that exact reason.

So please don't ascribe any general opposition to Norris merely on foot of his electoral performance.

Why not say one of your favourite people? And didn't you recently say that if you are gay there's "something fundamentally wrong with you"

Firstly, he's not one of my favourite people.

Secondly, no. I did not. Thank you very much.

He's not one of your favourite people - he's one of your favourite gays. Gays aren't people, then?

Secondly, yes. You did. Right here on the children thread for all to see.

"Well, yes, if you are gay, or put your job first then there is something fundamentally wrong with you. Don't get me wrong, live and let live, but it's a fundamental law of humanity to want to reproduce. If you don't feel that urge, there's something gone wrong there, biologically speaking"

When you grow up and get to live life a bit beyond the narrow confines you currently inhabit maybe you'll look back at your childhood transgressions with a sense of shame and newfound humility.

Until then, perhaps you should try your controversial schtick on a more suitable thread?

yeah ok, welcome on-board the 'high horse' powered bandwagon bono, you're a bit late but theres still some scraps left.

Taken out of context. The argument was if you don't want to reproduce then there is something fundamentally wrong with you. As it is fundamental to our species to reproduce. In that sense, there is something fundamentally wrong.

    Gays are people, Old Hippy.

Nothing equestrian about it. You made an ignorant, homophobic & ill judged comment and people rightly called you out on it.

Yes, gays are people. Therefore, DN is one of your favourite people. I'm glad we got that sorted.

The rest of it - as to what is "wrong" is fundamentally in your mind.

No, he is not one of my favourite people. He is one of my favourite gays. If i include non gays, he is relegated to "someone i respect".

By the way, try to show some class and leave what is essentially a thread wishing a sick man nothing but the best as it is, rather than going on a personal crusade.

I'd ask you to show some class and admit he's a person first and therefore, one of your favourite people. No crusade involved, just a bit of respect.

I have no idea if that particular poster has an agenda or anything (nor do I really care), but as a matter of interest if I said:

David Norris is one of my favourite men
    or
David Norris is one of my favourite Senators,

would they be, in your eyes, wrong?

No. I took issue with the poster's wording because he's on record as seeing gays as "fundamentally wrong".

Besides accusing the Senator of having AIDS, do you have any personal tributes to him or are you just courting controversy?

I don't see why you'd do that in a thread such as this tbh (fueling the flames, taking the bait, if that was the poster's intention). each to their own I guess

Apologies for derailing. I just loathe hypocrisy and I really shouldn't take the bait.

I think Senator Norris is a great human being and I've had the honour of meeting the man on occasion. He's a witty, learned person and I have found him nothing short of an inspiration.

"Seriously ill", someone is not being forthright here. If he was that seriously ill how would he be anticipating a return to work so early? And in such a strenuous job? Why doesn't his office go to the media and say that his recovery is faster than anticipated? I mean, the guy loves superlatives but these don't stand up to analysis. Although he was able to hang on to his jobs long enough while collecting a form of disability. If that was a young fellow from the wrong side of town he would feel the full rigours of insurance investigators/social welfare detectives. Trinity deemed him unfit AFAIK so how did his present paymasters come to the conclusion that he was/is well enough to keep 'contributing' to Irish society?

As for old hippy, I dare not answer your irritatingly repetitive questions as you seem to have an itchy finger while in the environs of the red button.

The man is a HUMAN BEING......(So what if he is gay....thats his right.....it doesnt bother me in the slightest)

He has cancer...(sorry to hear that and hope he recovers asap)

He is looking forward with regards to the future and being upbeat about his future too.
Fair play to you Mr Norris and get well soon.

....you aren't considering all the facts. Depending on the treatment and how he responds to it he could continue working. Or he could have been given the choice between a year sick as a pig in a bed or 6 months doing more or less what he wanted.

I don't share his world view or (all of his) political ideologies, but I agree that he's been a a positive influence for the causes he's taken on his agenda (not just gay/equal rights). I've also had the pleasure of meeting him on a few occasions and he's a gent.

I am also very critical of him on some matters but this is really not the thread for that so I won't delve any further there.

The one thing that did (and continues) to trouble me when the news broke is the part of the statement where he said he was making the statement as a result of media queries in regards to his health. Senator Norris worded this part very nicely. But it annoys me that the media and general public were intruding into his privacy in contacting him during what could only be a distressing time. However anyone feels about Brian Lenihan, the media annoyed me the way (and timing) they "exposed" his illness.

Don't know, that stuff just annoys me that people even public ones can't be left alone to handle and come to terms with a serious illness
