Years ago in Dublin I was en route early in the morning to an interview and managed to dip my tie in coffee. Senator Norris, after some chuckling, gave me his upon learning that I was headed to an interview.

Legend. Here's to a speedy recovery.

That's the "Last Great British Tarquin Quoters", right? Apart from the accent, which, Drummlike, he must have pulled from his arse, because I've yet to come across a part of ireland that has that as its own,

He was born into an old Anglo Irish family & was brought up amid the remnants of the old Ascendency order, hence the accent. There are plenty of people who speak just like him, if you know where to look. Lord Henry Mountcharles (of Slane Castle fame) was on the Last Word with Matt Cooper a few days ago, and his accent was damm near identical to David Norris. Don't be so quick to judge Norris of being a fake or a spoofer. His accent is perfectly genuine for someone of his background.

All the best to you David. As someone else just said, you are one of the gooduns around here & and Lord knows, there are precious little of those about these days.

    Get well soon Mr. Norris.

Considering what he's done for LGBT rights in Ireland, himself and Mary Robinson should be treated as national heroes.Unfortunately, many people just see that he's a Senator and assume he's never done anything useful.

He is a charming, witty and clever man, and was horribly treated in the election.

    A speedy recovery, David.

Aye, a wit, though I didn't vote for him. I hope recovers for a few decades more of the same.

I wasn't referring to his accent in that regard, and I also said I thought he was one of the nice guys.:)

I have very little time for politicians or members of that profession. However Senator Norris is a different kettle of fish.

I love to listen to him speak - he is always engaging, very well spoken and very entertaining.

When i found out he was running for president he was getting my vote immediately.

A lovely, charming man and i hope he is about for many years to come.

Very upset to hear this news. Another great person sick with a horrible illness. He seems a very intelligent and likeable man. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

I never had the pleasure of meeting David Norris, I've only ever seen him in the media - he seems to have boundless energy and is of course a powerful intellect. I hope he recovers.

BIg fan of the man. Hope he gets well soon. This got me:
Hepatitis contracted from tainted drinking water while I was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994

Likewise I wish him a speedy recovery.

I used to work in Marlborough Street and would see the senator the odd morning when Id finish the night shift. Always got a loud ' good morning' and a smile .

He always had a smile for myself and everyone else. Lovely cheerful bloke.

When you grow up and get to live life a bit beyond the narrow confines you currently inhabit maybe you'll look back at your childhood transgressions with a sense of shame and newfound humility.

Until then, perhaps you should try your controversial schtick on a more suitable thread?

I don't know if you're trolling but this is what he said

"The cancer appears to be related to the initial incidence of viral hepatitis which I contracted from tainted drinking water while I was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994.
I have no difficulty in making this information public in response to press queries because I believe that there should be no stigma attaching to cancer as a disease. "

Wha? Born in the Congo and brought up in Ireland? You acquire an accent from those around you. Would you say that he was surrounded by people who spoke as if they had half a dozen walnuts in their mouths? Or an, as yet, undiscovered Celtic tribe?

I wonder why he keeps repeating: "which I contracted from tainted drinking water while I was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994".
Drinking tainted water is just one of the ways of contracting this. How is he so sure? Did he bring back a vial for analysis?

He's a good man who has done a lot of great work for this country, I wish him a speedy recovery.

What are you insinuating? And no weasel words, please.

As far as I'm aware he doesn't "keep repeating" in. He mentioned it once and most likely did so because of the narrow minded, petty and homophobic voices out there, some of which we've already seen in this thread.

It doesn't really feckin' matter how he contracted it. And drinking contaminated water is by far the biggest cause of Hep E

Probably because he knows that there are idiots who will jump to conclusions and make unpleasant insinuations unless he clarifies the source of his Hepatitis.

A quick google suggests that there has indeed been an ongoing issue with drinking water and Hepatic disease in that part of Europe.

Personally I couldn't care less if he has cancer, AIDS or any other disease because its simply none of my business.

I think he's a great guy, any time I've met him its been a positive experience and I was saddened to hear he's seriously ill.

Sincerely I hope he makes a speedy recovery, until then I hope he's comfortable and pain free.

Ah now hang on, he did himself no favours. He was far from horribly treated.

I have no time for the guy but I wish him well in his recovery.

    Gertrude's Law?

I just find the beatification of Norris a little uncomfortable. His own idea on the age of consent as in the Magill interview borders on criminal.
Why did the people reject him in the Presidential race after he initially was a shoe-in? Are ye trying to say that 93+% of the people were misguided?

    These points merit analysis.

Having said that, I hope he recovers from this illness.

Talk about jumping to a conclusion.
Just because people didn't vote for him to be President doesn't mean he was 'rejected' surely. Maybe people just slightly prefer Michael D.

I'll rephrase that. He was rejected by the voting public in favour of Michael D. Please keep the semantics out of it.

A decent skin. Eccentric but in a cheerful way. Not afraid to stand out of the crowd and be himself when being gay was illegal I'll always respect a man like himself who takes a stand..
