Vegan Food in Cork

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows where to get the best selection of vegan food in Cork. Will I need to go to a specialist store to get the food i'll need to feed my family?

You'll get the basics like dried beans, lentils and grains in most supermarkets - Supervalu and Tesco both do a very good range. Some of the bigger supermarkets like Tesco do tofu and Quorn products (not sure if they're vegan though). There's a health food store in Douglas Court shopping centre that I believe does a decent range of foods, but I haven't shopped there in a while. I do remember them having a fairly good range of tofu though. Asian markets would probably have a good range of specialist foods as well.

I'm not Vegan - I just like veggie food - so that's as much as I know!

You should also try the Quay Co-Op on Sullivan's quay and the health food shop upstairs in Paul street shopping centre

Solidarity Books on Douglas Street serve vegan food every Tuesday at 7pm if you want to eat out (€5 suggested donation).
I think there is a vegan cafe across the road too?

yeah very healthy food across the road from Solidarity Books on Douglas street are primarily Vegan. they even have a buffet on a Wednesday night, which delicious!

gulpd cafe in the triskel also usually have vegan options for food and cakes!

If you like indian, Iyers on popes street is a vegetarian cafe on popes street. It does loads of vegan. Take-away as well.

English market has a few places that do almond milk and soy, and tofu. There is a health shop in wilton shopping center that does the egg substitutes for baking.

Tesco / Aldi and then a specialist shop for a few things like mayonaise, pates etc.

Once you keep your eyes open, you'll find it easy. ( after 10+ years living with a vegan, i can scan ingredients in a microsecond

)

Milk - Alpro Soy in the milk fridge
Butter - PURE range in butter fridge

Best of all, Dees Burgers and sausages. 100% organic, 100% vegan, 100% natural and made in Cork. (as a meat eater, I LOVE her burgers!)

Treats - Fruit shortie, fig rolls, ginger snaps, hob nobs and many others.
Sweets - american hard gums, skittles, lindt chocolate orange.

Every day foods - pasta sauces, pasta and veg.

Easy take outs - veg pizza without cheese.

Liberty Grill on Washington St have some lovely Vegan options on their menu, much more than the usual token 'veggie' options in most restaurants. Good prices too, I recommend their Tempeh burger, absolutely delicious.

Cork has actually developed an excellent vegan/vegetarian scene in the past 5 years or so. Much more choice than most people would imagine.

Cool. Never seen tempeh on a menu before. Been eating in a few places in that area, and that one slipped under my radar - just expect grills to be very meat-centric.

Another recommendation for the Quay Co-op. Usually their stuff is great, and reasonably priced too. Heard a lot about Iyer's but really don't see what the fuss is about there - speaking as someone who likes Indian food a lot. Then again I haven't noticed any decent-looking Indian restaurant in the city, so maybe that's why.

Another option for eating out is Wagamama, which is a Japanese restaurant with some nice vegetarian options. Not sure about vegan, but I'd imagine they'd just leave out egg.

I assume you know it already, but maybe as a newbie to cork.... Anyway, for vry nice nights out, Cafe Paradiso is the spot. Vegetarian restaurant, plenty of vegan in there.

Always memorable meals. Good veggie cookbooks too. I have the first one, but I saw the other night he seems to have another few out.

Thanks again all, went to the Co-Op today, fantastic choice, I was amazed at what's out there. Bought loads to try, exciting times.
