David Norris "seriously ill" with cancer

SENATOR DAVID NORRIS is undergoing medical treatment for a serious cancer, he revealed today.
The Dublin-based politician issued a statement in response to a number of media inquiries concerning his health and well-being.

He thanked the team of consultants at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital for the “superb treatment” he has received and confirmed that the illness appears to be related to an initial incidence of viral hepatitis contracted in eastern Europe in the mid-1990s.

The 68-year-old said he will return to work in the coming days.

The statement in full:

"My office has been contacted in recent days by sections of the press making inquiries concerning my state of health and general medical condition. The following statement will I hope provide an adequate response.

I am currently undergoing medical management for a serious cancer condition. I am extremely grateful for the superb treatment I have received from the team of consultants at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital as well as the nursing and general hospital staff.

The cancer appears to be related to the initial incidence of viral hepatitis which I contracted from tainted drinking water while I was on unpaid Government business in Eastern Europe in 1994.
I have no difficulty in making this information public in response to press queries because I believe that there should be no stigma attaching to cancer as a disease. I continue to enjoy life and am looking forward to returning to my duties in Seanad Eireann over the next few days.

Years ago in Dublin I was en route early in the morning to an interview and managed to dip my tie in coffee. Senator Norris, after some chuckling, gave me his upon learning that I was headed to an interview.

That's a nice story. I was never his biggest fan but that's not to say that I disliked him in any way, but now I like him a little bit more.

I don't always agree with his policies, but he definitely seems to be one of the most earnest, hard working and honest politicians we have,and we could do with a lot more like him. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Wishing him the best, he definitely falls into the category of one of the most influential characters in terms of helping to resolve human rights issues in this country. John Crown and Norris strike me as some of the few arguments in favour of retaining the Seanad.

He certainly adds to the gaiety of the nation, would have voted for him as El Presidente had Michael D. not been in the race.

This is sad news. I hope he recovers quickly.

I met the man years ago when I was in college writing my thesis. After much badgering of his secretary for an interview, Mr. Norris invited me around to his house for tea and biscuits.

It was exactly as you'd expect it to be - a tall Victorian house which was a vibrant, delightful, scattered mess on the inside - old books piled high to the ceiling, dusty antiques and ornaments all over the place.

He greeted me at the door with a big warm smile and spent about three hours with me, regaling tales of his trips abroad, time he spent in Turkey, his own college experience, the love of his life.

He kept referring to me as a "bright young lady" which put a smile on my face for probably the rest of the year.

At that point in my thesis research, I'd faced a barrage of fcuk offs / no replies from the various people I needed to interview who weren't enamoured by the idea of setting aside time for a poxy college student, so Norris became my new hero. His bright personality, intellect and generosity of spirit is unparalleled in the public sphere he works in and I'm really rooting for a full recovery for him.

And his relentless determination to fight for what he believes in. I'm sure he's thrilled with today's U.S Supreme Court events.

That's the "Last Great British Tarquin Quoters", right? Apart from the accent, which, Drummlike, he must have pulled from his arse, because I've yet to come across a part of ireland that has that as its own, I like him. I sort of regard him as a big old spoofer, spoofing on about Joyce, spoofing in the Seanad, spoofing about pretty much everything, but he seems like a nice spoofer. I'm probably just jealous that he's such a good spoofer, but I also hope he recovers and goes on spoofing for years more. It takes a few nice spoofers to make the world go around.

I had the great fortune to meet David Norris on two occasions; I caught the tail end of an anecdote when I first met him.

"So I said, 'I will NOT retract the statement that the Senator is a little bollocks, because the Senator IS a little BOLLOCKS!!"

He is a charming, witty and clever man, and was horribly treated in the election.
