I can't buy alcohol after 10PM even though I live near a shop that closes at 11 PM and one 24 hour shop

Do you agree with the no booze after 10PM rule? I think it's ridiculous.

I think it'd ridiculous that people can't stock up in advance. You never hear anyone complaining about not being able to find a chiropodist at 12 on a Saturday night.

Our nanny state is f*cking ridiculous in so many ways. Next up: Facebook to be policed because parents can't keep their kids under control online and too many people think the internet is serious business. :mad:

If you moved in to the shop you could have anytime access, or move some of the drinks to your home. It'd be so exciting to open the press at 10.05 and be able get drink.

I think it's ridiculous. My theory behind it is:

a) that because of the loss of business in pubs since with the recession,
b) that off licences and s large stores (super value and tesco etc) are doing deals on booze and selling cheap booze,

the government are losing a fortune in tax revenue due to people either drinking at home so no taxis or public transport being used. No VAT on seriously over priced pints/bottles/shots etc.

but they wrap it up under the guise of "we're trying to fight underage drinking"

Or not being able to buy on a Sunday before 12.30 .. Was shopping for the Sunday roast this morning and said I'd pick up a bottle of wine while I was there..

Couldn't buy it , had to come back later if I wanted to buy a bottle.

Is that you Roisin Shortall? In a modern, grown up society, I shouldn't have to stock up. If I am over the age of 18 and I am drinking responsibly, who's business is it when I buy my drink, whether its 22.10 or 10.22.

Ever been to a party where you ran out at 10.30? Ever walked into you local shop at 10.05 and are refused purchase of you 4 pack of Prazsky? Supposedly to curb underage drinking when really it is to prop up the vintners. Irritating.

You can go into most pubs and get a take away usually.

There is an opening for vending machines that sell alcohol.

Where are all these pubs that allow takeaways? Ive only seen it once when my friend knew the owner, AND it was limited to beer. Any other time I asked I was denied.

Am I just unlucky?

I am completely against it. Anyone over the age of 18 who wants to buy a few beers or bottle of wine to relax should be allowed to if a shop is open. At least we are not as bad as Sweden, Norway and Finland though, where all alcohol above 4% has to be bought from government run outlets with even worse opening hours.

I buy take out in a pub sometimes, when they call last orders but they charge the same price per can as they do for a pint. I really hate doing it but there are nights when I am going to a spontaneous session after the pub and need a few cans so going home isn't always an option when it comes to the idea of stocking up.

No, I don't like Curly-wurlies.

I do like Jameson, and I do live above an off license. So when if I come back from a business trip and find I only have a thimbleful left, and it is 10.15, I get a bit annoyed.

When I go shopping I take note of what I have in the house before I leave, so that I know what to buy. It does wonders for not running out of things.

I once was in that exact situation and I was p*ssed off at not being free to spend my hard earned money (and pay VAT to the government) on a couple of drinks.

However, I then woke up the next morning with a fresh head, and I was thankful for the nanny state, which saved me money and helped my health

Not being able to buy drink after 10pm is less an example of nanny state and more something I personally see as worse, the power of commercial vested interests on the legislators in our country. In what fairytale does anyone possibly think not being able to buy alcohol after 10pm actually reduces underage drinking or alcohol abuse. The law is there to make publicans happy, if it's 10.01pm and you decide you would like to have a drink you've no choice but the pub.

Edit: Apparently, its not just me.

Well it helps to be friendly or know the owner/bar staff.

I can ring at any time and get fags, ice, cans etc at off licence price and get it delivered.

A few years ago me and my mates used to be loads of cans and hide them in secret locations around the locality so they were available at any hour this is something you may also consider.
