That's a balls, but probably the right call.
Have a look at the an post cycle series and maybe pick a sportive or two to keep the focus on training over the next few weeks?

Yea p&d 55 proved too much for my body! But I really did this by keeping going when my body said rest up.
It's hard to swallow as I've never really given up on anything, that might sound immature.
At least I can go for pints on my bday end of may!

Sorry to hear your out Ste,everything seemed to be going well until Wexford, but as others have said it's probably the right call but an utter bitter one to take.

If its any consolation I think Cork, while they don't offer a refund, they will defer entry until next year with production of a medical cert.

My birthday is end of May too! I'll be celebrating with a pint of High 5 carbohydrate drink and a cake made of pasta :( Have one for me Ste!

You haven't given up on CCM, you're body has forced you out, there's a big difference. In many ways, it takes more balls to make the difficult call and pull out of the race than blindly run on against all wisdom. Please don't beat yourself up about it, it's just a blip in the road. You'll be back better, stronger and wiser in no time.

Sorry to hear Cork is out for you :( Hopefully you can do like Gav said and get some racing in on the bike and come back ready to smash DCM!

As hard a decision as it was to make, I'd imagine you know yourself that it's the correct decision. If you chanced it and broke down after 10 miles you'd feel much worse I would think. Get some rest and get sorted and bounce back for Dublin. Just a shame after all the hard work.

Tough call but a good call Stephen. I think the body is asking for a rest as it seems to be one thing after another. You are getting a very bad time of it. A few weeks off running will do you the world of good. You will be back stronger!

Sorry to hear about Cork Ste but as others have said its a wise move to quit now before things get any worse. The way second marathons have been going around here I think you have saved yourself a lot of heartache ;) Enjoy the birthday celebrations :D

Sorry to hear about cork chief. I know exactly how you feel.

You need to start again and build it up when all has settled down.

Yea it's a pain in the hole 😔 literally
    How is your recovery going?
    Keeping fit with cycling/swimming?
I can feel the drop in serotonin already
Planning a nice cycle tomorrow morning

Recovery is slow...getting there according to osteopath. Haven't run a yard in 5 weeks. Cycling tomorrow hopefully and for next few weeks. Have an mri appt to check it all out. Absolutely chomping at the bit to get back....

That's rough. What are the main issues? I'm still unsure what's going on with me but the left leg is just lame and I feel weakness at hip, below knee and ankle. No more dollars in the pot for physio so I'm relying on rest (from running). However it all felt a lot less lame yesterday.
Is it too late to enter the wheelchair race in cork? We could have a showdown?

Long story short....hip joint on right side out of line. Might be shallower on that side. Muscles had to compensate. Si joint got tighter. Leg started to get pulled around and rotated. This meant i was running across my knee. Calves took the brunt and the back of the knee. Hamstrings next to work harder and gluts. Right leg completely powerless. Felt like it was detached from my body.

This could have been building for ages and ages. Mileage jump found me out in the end. Muscles will take time to get back to normal but with 2 osteopath visits im a different man. The rest was not enough. Things needed to be helped back into place.

I hope things sort out for you man, i really do. Last 5 weeks were not cool.

So sorry that you're out of Cork, a very tough decision for you but definitely the right one. Injury is very hard to cope with (so sorry for you upthe19th also) but it's important to think of your long term happiness, a break now could mean you'll still be happily running in 20 years time.
Physio etc is very expensive but I agree with ut19th, some injuries need more than rest alone.
Wishing you both the very best for successful recoveries.

Thanks MS. Yea best decision in long run. I hadn't decided if I was doing dublin but now I have to!
I have to constantly interrupt the devil on my shoulder who keeps saying 'just try cork'! I'd feel worse if it all went wrong.

I've accepted it now. Just hope the 600 miles to date this year stands to me later in the year.

I might still go to cork that weekend, to spectate and support.

Did you have the Tuesday book off work? It would be a shame not to spend that day off hungover... ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 434 ✭✭tomred1N

unlucky with the injury ....I have been following your progress with interest all year and with similar goals...well the sub 4 bit anyway !!

to be honest if I had the choice of running a one marathon or getting 700 or 800 miles training done in 5 months I would choose the latter ..much greater achievement and great base to work from and I'd say a 3.30 attempt in late October would be far more comfortable than next week

Thanks Tom. And ViceVersa. You look on target to go well under the 4hours anyway. I'll see how things are for Oct.. getting out on the bike plenty this week. I'll prob see you down in Cork!

I've officially deferred my cork entry til next year :(
    Thanks for the tip docjewel
I did a fair bit of cycling this week, the bike didnt know what hit it, and unknown to the other cyclists I was racing them all to work :) I won by a mile
Got down to the boxing club for a good session too.. God I've lost a lot of upper body power (and weight) since I last went down.
Leg is feeling better every day, even considered doing the marathon again briefly, but sense soon sank back in.

Will be down in cork on the Sunday and back to Dublin the Monday.. So I won't be partying but will certainly be cheering for my boards buddies!

I'm not sure how CCM recruits its volunteers but you might want to consider marshalling since you're not running? Maybe drop them an email?
I had to pull out of DCM in 2009 with an injury but I volunteered at a water station in Phoenix Park and had a great time.
Failing that find a nice pub on the route with outdoor seating and treat yourself to a few beers while you cheer everyone on:)

Yea I think so! Noting sore now at all but still feel it wouldn't be hard to upset things again. I'd like to see someone for a once over before I commit to anything for future, but ill try a few miles this week.

Getting my head out of running and all that goes with it has been both good and bad. More focused in work and at home. But miss the buzz a lot!

Now off I go on my rothar to work!
    Look after them legs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭Steroo

I'm really struggling with the inability to run this week! So nice out. The bike is grand but just not the same buzz.

Starting hot yoga next week and hoping it will aid recovery and strengthen core and improve flexibility to evade the same injuries in future.

Also planning on starting an improvers swimming class next week to give myself more options.

Up a few lbs on the scales!

It's frustrating to feel the fitness slowly sliding

I understand your frustration Ste - hopefully the patience will pay off.

Have to say the hot yoga sounds <ahem> interesting - but the first thing I thought of when I read your post was Homer Simpson talking about foxy boxing :p

Totally understand your frustration Stephen.Really feel for you after all the hard work earlier in the year. Hopefully the new regime will be very beneficial and will help get you back in the game when the time is right.

I put my runners on yesterday... and did 3 easy miles with no issues! ;-)
Went back to Osetopath last week & she said it was okay to try. just not to push it at all.
I've also been doing my Hot Yoga & the stretches are great... all core work & I come out dripping wet like I just climbed out of a swimming pool.

So I'll try another little run next week & go from there... hope I can still get on the DCM train but we'll play it by ear.
If I can, I will be doing things differently, less obsessive & more flexible.. and listen to my body.. and more Core work. and less Boards probably too... only from stepping away did I see how much time I spent checking it on my phone etc... everything in moderation.

Welcome back Ste! Great to hear you're getting back out there.

Can you share your secrets on how you beat your Boards addiction??? I could do with learning that particular skill :o
