Was in Penneys in Dublin today and they had a photo display of Penneys shops around the country down through the years and had this image of the old one on High Street in Killarney that some of you might be interested in. Judging by the sign, the car out front and some of the fashions on the shoppers, I'd say it was taken in the 70s/early 80s?

Definitely the 70's with the way the print is on the sign.

probably 70's. Is the car a Ford Escort? Note the prams but not buggies...buggies did not really come in until the 80's. The car is pointed south so the High St must have been two way when the photo was taken. And look at all those bikes parked up in the alley!

Thanks for this thrown-back through the years. I would agree with late 70's/early 80's alright.

Sur look at 'Mad Lars' bike-rental in the adjacent lane-way also :)

2 cars were broken into in the upper torc carpark at the start of the old kenmare road this evening. Don't leave your car unattended up there.

I was walking with my dogs this evening by Torc and found a number of stolen bags strewn all over the place under the trees. Rang the Gardai and they asked me to drop them in. I bagged wallets, passports, phones, driving licences and dropped them into the Killarney Garda station. They belonged to tourists and Irish people. I hope that their impression of Killarney hasn't been ruined.

According to the eircom site it's live already but another month isn't too bad. Nothing better than living 13m away from the cabinet :D

Any chance there was a black north face jacket or a grey quicksilver backpack?

When and where was this stolen (upper or lower Torc waterfall carpark?).
Feck it now. Don't tell me you had yours stolen too? I'll try and make another trip about the place tomorrow evening. I don't think many people would have seen where they were dumped. I told the Gardai where I found them, it was a drive away from Torc.

This was back in April - upper Torc carpark. I was the one that made the original post about the break-ins back then.

    Damn.

I'd have bought a couple of passports off you! ;)

Presume they were just looking for cash, must have been fairly low level scumbags if they didn't realise that passports, phones and drivers licences could be gold in the world of identity fraud and theft.

I thought the same. There was one ID that I felt like robbing myself!

I just hope that the people got their IDs back before they had to travel.

While it is a shame about theft from vehicles the one thing that strikes me above that the Gardai asked madrabui to drop them into the station.

Did you take any necessary protection to avoid your fingerprints on the items etc?
It really shows the F***** up state of our public services and country in general if the Gardai don't have the resources to go and collect evidence themselves.

The story above just adds to the feeling that I have no faith or confidence in our police system.

Ah jasuz I don't think it would be like CSI Killarney!

Don't think they would finger-print everything they receive re:lost & found. If that were to be the case, then my prints would be on numerous files above there with them just needing one match to try resolve numerous cases and all I done was a good deed like madrabui above and hand in lost n found :)

Have you met any of the local Guards in Killarney through the years per chance, as a matter of interest like?

Why does it interest you? Yes I have, to answer your question, which I fail to see the point of.

No confidence??? They solved a murder in 12 days!!! How can you not have confidence? The action taken was obviously fairly swift.

If you find any items like the person with the torc story, it is standard to drop them to the station yourself. If it is needed, the gards will take your prints so they can discount them!

I guess you either never needed the help of the Gardaí before or you were on the wrong side of the law at some stage!

About 10 years ago, my brother found items on a quiet road on our rural property. To cut a long story short, it turned out the items were dumped from a jeep which had been stolen and subsequently used in a robbery of a shop in a nearby town. The items dumped included a cheque book which was in the name of the owner of the stolen jeep. The Gardai asked my brother to hold on to the items which he did for a while. They said they would call out and collect them in connection with the robbery. They didn't. We live about 6 miles from Killarney.

My brother eventually took them everything to Killarney station and a few months later got a phonecall from the owner of the jeep thanking him for his efforts. That was the last he heard of it.

I was just reminded of that story when I read the recent posts.

For anyone who cares. I went to the Dunloe crazy/mini golf course today. Standard little course but great fun and the hole aren't too hard. We were a group of four, my girlfriend and I are 24, my sister is 15 and girlfriends sister is 9. We all had a blast, especially when the 9 year old got a hole in one :)

A very reasonable price of €15 for the four of us too imo. With the summer hols here it could be some different entertainment for some families/groups.

Was there also today with my lad. Also had a great time. €4 for the crazy golf and €2 for 25 balls in the driving range.

    We really enjoyed it

Yeah we were going to have a go at the driving range but time got the better of us. Next time though

Is this Porterhouse connected to the Porterhouse chain of bars in Dublin/Bray which have their own microbrewery range of beers?

Don't think so. It is owned by a local businessman, Pat Sheehan, who also owns McSorleys (i worked there a few years ago) on College St. and an off licence on New St. He could have more places in Killarney/Kerry but they are the only few I know about.
