Well the major problem that first springs to mind is the feicking lack of cable management :P

None of the cables can be routed around the back of the motherboard tray? :(

Its a pretty basic case - its this

    http://www.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?adp=0&aid=49193&agid=635&apop=1

No where really to route anything - happy enough with it though considering it only cost 30 odd quid, and i didnt want a large case

€1.50 for compressed air? I'd be laughing. Last time I bought it it was something outrageous like €15 in Maplin's.

I have a mate with a full sized air compressor but was afeared of using it in case I damage something. I was also considering getting something like this to save money long-term.

Best not to use the air compressor, they tend to spray out a bit of water from time to time

Hey is it safe to mix 2 CL9 and and 2 CL8 G Skill sticks of ram on an AMD system mobo? Or will I run into major issues?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

I want to compare my benchmarks to other systems but only have a 1680x1050 monitor. Is there a way to force the benchmarks to run at 1080p, I know I wouldn't be able to see the output while it's benching but if I could run it like this then go back to 1680x1050 to read my score. I've never heard of it being done but maybe there is a way.

Should be fine you'll just need to loosen the timings of the faster kit out to match the slower one. I'm running two kits 4 dimms in total of quite different 1333 and 1600 ddr3 mixed with no issue on a 790FX board.

Don''t think you can, your monitor will automatically downsize a 1080p signal so it can display it at 1680x1050.

Thanks for the reply. How would I go about loosening the timings of the faster kit?

Not much to it, just a case of manually setting them in the bios menu.

Just bit the bullet and went for this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Mechanical-Gaming-Keyboard/dp/B00C67C79C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371491711&sr=8-1&keywords=cooler+master+mechanical+keyboard

I'm looking forward to my first mechanical keyboard :P Has anybody else bought it? It estimates the dispatch time as 1-3 months, is this actually accurate?

Im debating getting that also, as im using a generic microsoft KB at the moment. But not sure if I can justify €60 on a keyboard...

Amazon despatch times can vary. Sometimes they say delivery within 2-5 weeks, and stock will come in the next day. Id say it will be sent out in two or so weeks.

Wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction here, I'm considering getting another 7950 for crossfire as I will prob end up getting another catleap or qnix.

My psu is a corsair ax750 and with it came two cables which hav 12 pins on one end and on the other is divided into 2 with a 6 + 2 pin connector on each end. I'm using this cable atm for the single 7950.

However, if I crossfire the 7950 I won't have another 12 pin slot on the psu end for this same cable. Any thoughts? There are loads of 6 pin slots available so should I be looking for a 6 pin to 8 pin psu cable??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

Yeah, there should be enough connectors with the AX750.

So there's two 12 pin connectors which each split into 6 or 6+2 cables? Then you have a total of 4 6-pin or 8-pin connectors? From what I understand of what you are saying, you already have enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 228 ✭✭Bacon and Cabbage

yeah sorry I probably should have been clearer. The 7950 I have needs an 8 and a 6 pin cable, the other end of this cable has 12 pins. So I have 2 cables which have 12 pins on the psu side and each of these cables split into 2 8 pin on the other side. One of these cables I am currently using. So if I get another 7950 I will have the correct cable for the 7950 end, but on the psu end there will be no slot for the 12 pin connection. It's a modular psu, just realised that's probably causing confusion :p

So you're saying that you have the cable, but don't have the free 12 pin space on the PSU itself?

    258660.png

According to the picture, there's 2x12-pin connections.
I assume that you are using one for the graphics card and the other for the EPS connector? EPS is the one that you connect near the CPU. 8 pins.

That can be solved easily enough. You can disconnect the EPS one from the PSU and use the cable that will directly connect it into the second one on the bottom from the left. That should free up the two 12 pin ones for your graphics cards.

Does anyone think that vram may become an issue with future console ports?

Now normally graphics cards run out of GPU power before they hit their vram limit. But what about 670,680,770 cards with only 2GB?
In Crysis 3 I am hitting 1.75 GB vram with everything on very high and AA on FXAA. This is at a sub 1080p resolution(1680x1050)

I get 55 - 75 fps in games so I am much closer to my vram limit than I am to not getting enough frames because of pure gpu power.

I know this won't be a PC port but kilzone on ps4 uses 3GB vram apparently and that's with a gpu behind it that is almost equal in power to a 7850

What do you guys think? Should people with high powered cards but only 2GB vram be worried?

Crysis 3 on pc is miles ahead of anything that will come out on next gen consoles so I doubt it.

Ps4 has 8gb's of shared ggdr5 memory so it's hard to compare to how a pc works.

2TB Expansion USB 3.0 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard Drive - Black

£65, good price if anyones after one.

The PS4 doesn't have any other RAM for the system; most PCs will have 8GB DDR3 as well as video RAM. The PS4 will be taking some of that (at least 1GB iirc) for OS and background stuff.

Secondly, just because 1.75GB is reported doesn't mean you'll see much difference even if you only have 1.5GB or 1.25GB to spare. Much of that usage is most likely on standby with data that may be needed.
Results usually show that video RAM sizes makes a lot less difference that you'd think. It's been a while since I've seen it tested, but but I doubt it comes into play at 1680x1050 resolution with 1GB vs 2GB, even. The 6950s showed next to no difference at 1920x1080 with 1GB vs 2GB. Within 2% of each other or something. OK, cards are faster now and games are newer, but I think for the life of the current generation, 2GB is fine. Next generation could probably do with a bump up, as resolutions are moving quite visibly.

Edit: I suppose that it would be worth adding, that it probably would be more important if you are choosing cards for SLI as you'll be more likely to get multiple monitors/higher resolution and (assuming that it still is the case) the information is copied to both cards, meaning that you only have the RAM on a single card.

Yes but it's reported that the new kill zone uses 3gb for graphics alone and 1.5gb for system.
    http://gimmegimmegames.com/2013/05/sony-confirms-killzone-shadow-fall-used-1-5gb-system-ram-3gb-video-memory/

But it's true that they are very different systems even if the ps4 is x86. On that point the original xbox is still not emulated properly even though it's based on a pentium 3 system.

And the xbox one has no GDDR.

I guess multiplatform games will run well on PC then :)

When you say generation do you mean console generation? I find generations on PCs difficult to define.

I meant that the next series of cards should be bumping up the RAM for their midrange cards. Hopefully, anyway. Aside from the likes of Crysis 3 at full settings, a 7850 will handle just about everything out there at 1920x1080 well. We'll see an improvement in the quality of games now with the console update and the fact that they're on x86 architecture. However, the consoles will be aimed to 1920x1080. PC people, once the frames are nice and smooth, will be looking at higher resolution -and those 1440p monitors are coming down fast.

there's no way killzone is using 3gb of vram on graphics thats definetly game total and 1.5gb going to OS
But it's true that they are very different systems even if the ps4 is x86. On that point the original xbox is still not emulated properly even though it's based on a pentium 3 system.

its more to go with the fact that very few people care let alone any talented coders. the past 2 generations havent produced anything that would match the generations of the late 80's and 90's in terms of iconic games
And the xbox one has no GDDR.

it wont make a difference the esram will keep the bandwidth gap close
I guess multiplatform games will run well on PC then :)

hopefully square enix have confirmed that FFXV is built on DX11 which is a first so we could see it on PC

meaning full Direct X releases is probably the closest you'll get to defining a pc generation imo
