To the mechanical keyboard gurus, I'm trying to get a feel for how loud brown switches are, I currently have a really crappy €10 keyboard and looking at an upgrade.

Compactness and backlighting are the biggest priority (16" is about as wide as I can go on the current desk).

TBH the the CM Storm QuickFire TK Brown for €62 ish on amazon is about as much as I would be willing to spend at the moment, the only problem I can see is that the PC is in a common area so I really can't have something that is too 'clicky'. I suspect a red would be ideal but that version seems quite a bit more expensive.

I know it brown switch is quieter than the blue for example, but since I have never heard either of these in the flesh, this knowledge is somewhat useless to me. :) If the browns would still be a little loud for a common area I might leave it for a few months and hopefully up the budget a little bit.

Most of the noise coming from switches that aren't Blues with mech. keyboards are from bottoming out - the sound of the bottom of the key cap hitting the base plate. Browns (meaning the switch itself) are pretty quiet, not that much louder than bottoming out on a regular keyboard.

You can solve the problem of bottoming out somewhat by buying a set of o-rings to put on the bottom of the key caps. This doesn't eliminate the noise, but it lessens it. I'm back in Dublin (Balinteer area) permanently now, so you're welcome to try out my keyboard if you like. I have a few o-rings as well so you could hear the difference (they're cheap, probably no more than €5 for a full set or something).

I'm in exactly the same boat as you marco polo. I'm spending a nice bit on my PC come payday (:P)and would be interested in hearing response with regard to mech keyboards, as that's one of the items on my list, for the same reasons as yourself, too.

the reds and browns are the same on noise levels afaik and there are a lot of variables on how you type. (im a heavy typer so i bottom out keys almost every time i type)

If your set on mechanical there isnt a switch that is quieter than browns, blues are the only ones that are louder than the others

I'm still in the middle of sorting my room out (still at the post bomb detonation stage) but I'll try and record comparisons if I can at some point today. No promises though. :P

Thank for the test offer, but I think there is enough info in the helpfuly replies from yourself and NTMK to make a decision.

I hadn't realized that there was not much difference between everything except the blues so that was the only thing really bothering me, and since I am set on mechanical I can safely go with the brown in that case.

Worst case scenario, I can either develop a lighter touch or get a set of o-rings, I didn't know such a thing existed so I can definately go mechanical now, knowing that the safety net is there if I start getting dirty looks from the couch while gaming. :p

When people talk about "latency problems" with SLI/Crossfire what does that mean in practice?

A long article but probably the most comprehensive.

I know the look your talking about. My model M used to make so much noise when i played starcraft that it could be heard from the other side of the house

I was told if i didnt learn to type softer my pc would be moved out to the shed :pac:

I installed a better front fan in my 600t a while ago. With the extra air flow the noise increased lots, even though the replacement fan was supposed to have less noise.
It turns out the front grill was causing vibrations so since there is a dust filter covering it anyway I removed the grill with a dremmel.
It now makes less noise than when I had the stock fan even though there is more air flow.
So there's a tip for anyone with the 600t, it's an easy job as the dremmel easily cuts the metal.

What'd be the best quality speakers for under €75?

Have an AS Rock Z77 Extreme 4.

I always found Logitech speakers to be great for the price. Its just depends what you need. 2.1 or 5.1

I have a set of logitech 2.1 speakers and they do a grand job,I only use them the odd time as I usually have my headset on.

There seems to be a huge gulf in price between different speakers (both 5.1):

    £60
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Z506-Surround-Sound-Speakers/dp/B003WJR482/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1370880231&sr=1-2&keywords=logitech+5.1#productDetails

    £260
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Z-906-Surround-Sound-Speakers/dp/B004MY4PU6/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1370880231&sr=1-1&keywords=logitech+5.1

The obvious difference I can see is the wattage (the latter is double the first).

What should I be looking for? I'd like to get 5.1 if possible (I presume it's better). If it's too expensive, 2.1 is fine too.

Depends what your budget is. I have the Z906s myself, and when paired with a good sound card, they're fantastic. I previously had the older version of the 506s (X-540s) and these were quite a step up. I got them as a present, so if I'm honest, the 506s are probably better value. These speakers aren't four times as good as the old ones, but they are better.

    That's grand so.

I was a bit worried with such a gulf in cost - like the 506s weren't "proper" 5.1 or something.

    I'll go for them so.

    Thanks as always lads.

Its more than likely absolute rubbish but thats the rumour I heard. The Internet would never lie to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

Wouldn't surprise me. If there was any time they could get away with such a big price hike, it would be with the next generation of stuff. If people get used to it...

One good thing out of all of this is we PC Gaming Gods (lol) will benefit alot of the next generation of consoles
