Forgot to mention this. Temperature of beer is something that needs to be considered. Drquirky has done some reading and apparently the perfect temp is achieved about 15 minutes after taking it out from fridge so I guess 6-8 degrees celcius maybe?

Cider is a no go and yes we are heading for a session after. Krusty and drquirky did a recce Friday as far as I know and will probably PM you the details soon.

Our friend WR holder Josh Harris has been quoted on several different training vids and interviews saying that having a beer either too cold or too warm can be a massive miscalculation. His point about warm beer is that it fizzes up more- tbh I can see where he's coming from on this.

Cider defo a nono - am still working on the particulars of the afters- quick question for the competitors- would people be willing to kick in a few yoyos for platters or the like after? Just thinking we might have some hungry folks and beer/empty stomach = a slighty ropey combo.

Just to add my voice to the beer suggestion debate. If I were running- I would only be drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon. I actually think its the perfect beer for this kind of thing- balanced taste, not too fizzy and doesn't have the yuck factor that something like Coors Light would have for me... It is available at some offy's around Dublin btw

I think this is a great idea. How much per head?

don't think she is running, just 'stew'arding

I am indeed 'stew'arding as it's a busy weekend in the Stew house with Mr S heading to Portumna on Saturday and me taking a bus load of kids to the Community Games in Santry.
It's a pity I'm not racing as I've been drinking consistently (or should that be consistently drinking?) since The Coal Hole in London:) so I reckon I could have given it a good shot (and by that I mean I would have spewed the first bottle, drank the next 3 slowly, DNFed and then proceeded to tell everybody how much I love them;))

On another but similar note. What are people's nutrition strategies? I think an empty stomach is asking for disater but obviously some sort of soakage is required!
I'm thinking of taking the day of work and showing up stinking drunk if you fancy it ;)
Maybe a belly of active charcoal to absorbs the gas might do the trick :) , you have a week of work to get a project under way ;) (this maybe a ped for beer miles)

Problem is getting a chilled beer to the track. Maybe best to freeze it and let it thaw out on the way?

R.E. Nutrition, I generally chug better when thirsty and hungry. Thinking of having nothing to eat/drink after lunch and going for a long jog before the race to get the thirst up!!
It might also be an idea to eat a salty snack a few hours before the race....

Edit: +1 for the platters after the race...

THE BEST BEER MILE WORKOUT – BY BOARDS.IE – REPORT

So stocked up my bag earlier (containing 3 beers and a spare t-shirt in case I threw up) and headed off to the local park. To my horror when I arrived there were kids playing hurling...I snuck down the back of the park out of view and dropped my bag ready for action. Earlier, I had a beer while the BBQ was going to get “warmed up”. Corona 355ml was the choice. These was simply used to go ‘over-volume’ for training purposes before stepping back to 330ml Sol next week. My target is sub10...I feel this would be respectable as I know I won’t be able to compete with the big guns, certainly in the beer aspect anyway ;)

Once I’d marked out the 400m loop roughly by doing one lap and with no one in sight I was ready for action. Popped open the first and started the watch. Now this would be my first time skulling a beer in at least 3 years...and it showed...a terrible 50 seconds later and I was off. I ran the 400s at roughly 80% effort. I feel that this is key, otherwise coming into the next beer transition I’ll struggle with the beer. I slowed for the last 50 to prep for the next assault. Popped open the next one in about 2 seconds using a keyring bottle opener. This worked well but it was then downhill from here, second beer was a big struggle in 70 seconds.:o Embarrassing to say the least.

It’s clear that the beer skulling is my weak point and I knew it would be. Burped the sh!te out of it for the second lap and had an 70% chance of getting sick which means it will be a formality next week. At least I’ll know what to expect.

Finished the half mile in 5:06 and major work to do. Will have to go for a second session mid week and in between work on the downing technique which at the moment is terrible.

Cooled down with another 400m while sipping the 3rd bottle to let the body know that there is more on the way where the previous two came from.

Sub 10 will be touch and go, but hopefully with a couple more beer mile specific workouts I’ll dip under on the night.

    Findings:
    1. Josh Harris runs a beer mile in the the same amount of time that I do half a mile – Hero
    2. Skulling a beer when you are sitting down is a totally different ball game than when doing it with an elevated heart rate. Big struggle
    3. I’m going to get the gawk on Friday – bring necessary support equipment.

Unfortunately I'm working in Glasnevin on Friday, and will have to drive home so I won't be able to compete. :( I'm going to drive down anyway to watch and help with the organisation (and maybe snap a few photos for the records :pac:) and will hang around for the afters for a while anyway. Was thinking of giving it a go with non-alcoholic beer but I think it kind of goes against the spirit of the event.

Edit: Took out time just in case.

Edit 2: Platter sounds good to me!

Who's bringing the defibrillator on Friday?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,915 ✭✭✭✭menoscemo

RK, please delete the above as it is supposed to be a secret ^^^^^ ;)

Anyway I will be driving from west Dublin around 6.15 on friday; if anyone needs a lift, please PM.

    Huh?

I think the exact location is meant to be a secret (or something like that! :)).

RK, I will be dropping a friend back to the Drumcondra area after the pub on Fridat night if that's any good to you, you're welcome to get a lift with me. PM me if you get stuck.

    Loving this thread.

Make sure you have some volunteers to video the race, and also to record everybody's times and finishing positions.

I've thought about this and I'd rather no video or photos. I know a few others feel the same.

I offered to Dr.Quirky to take photos seen as I'm not running but only on the pretense that everyone was happy with it. In that case I won't and will leave the gear at home. People will have to rely on their memory to remember this, although that might not be the easiest thing after downing four bottles! :)

Anybody wearing spikes or are they banned under Health & Safety?

Had my first, sort of, practice session last night. 3 cans of Ken and 2 bottles of Corona at a BBQ in my Dad's and challenged my Daughter (who was giving CL a lift) to a Man versus Car race back to my house. 1k for me 1.5k for them.....

Points of note, my breathing was very heavy!

    I won the race!

I got a headache afterwards but kept the contents of my stomach inside me!

@ meno, re; freezing the beer, will this not expand the fluid and pop the caps thus rendering you a bit of a Rosanna (allegedly) :D

After 4 bottles of beer within 10 minutes they could be classified as a dangerous weapon :)

I'm going into this completely unprepared. It'll be my first 'race' back from injury, and I've done no specific training. Let's hope I'm a natural...

How can you claim a world record if you have no video or photgraphic evidence?

Who knows where this is going to be run ;), but I'd hazard a guess that the surface will not be suitable for spikes (unless you plan to run with them on your hands to take out the competition).

I heard Digger was a professional at spiking drinks :D - that's what we're talking about, right?

+1 to the platter - I'd definitely throw a few quid in.

Am presuming that location for the afters will be convenient to public transport? Any offers of a lift to north county Dublin area would be gratefully received! ;)

don't think anybody has done a long range weather forecast yet so I'll kick it off :)

Could get a bit of rain but perfect temps!

This must be the only race thread in this forum were most of the talk has been about training/racing strategies rather than post-race pub, and even when post-race pub is talked about it's in the context of getting food!
