This is relevant to something that was being discussed earlier.

This thread was about a specific Archbishop's statement about abortion and whether or not that might represent a change in the Church's view on it.

It was locked and the OP was advised to either post in an abortion thread or the religion forum.

However the thread wasn't about abortion per se and would've been out of place in a discussion on whether or not abortion should be legal, and it is a fitting thread for AH (current news).

Presumably it was locked because of the likelihood of it descending into a thread on whether or not abortion should be illegal but that killed any chance of discussing the actual topic, which was discussion worthy.

My fear is that this will translate to all topics that descend into the usual lengthy back-and-forth fighting being locked. Will we not be able to discuss recent shootings in America because they'll inevitably descend into another gun control debate? Or what about changes in cannabis legislation? They'll always turn into arguments about legalisation. And so on.

There are a lot of topics that come up very often and descend into lengthy debates but the reason they come up so often is because there are routinely news stories about those topics. Will we be band from posting about news stories because of the inevitable direction that thread will take?

Nobody was banned from posting about certain topics, they were simply asked to keep to the relevant thread/forum.

    Pretty reasonable moderation IMHO.

I'm just saying that continuos moderation like that could effectively result in any topic related to abortion being banned regardless of the actual intended topic of discussion.

This is as far as I know, the most recent thread on abortion.

It debates all points from both sides of the argument and is still open, obviously if you or any other poster feel they have anything to add to the discussion, you can click on the link below.

But the topic that was closed was about a specific person's comments about abortion. It wasn't an abortion topic per se and would be out of place in that discussion.

That's how it started, but you and I (not to mention the mods) have been around here long enough to know that it was a one way street to church bashing and a re-hash of the thread I linked to earlier.

I know. But that means any topic on abortion regardless of how relevant or discussion worthy it is will be a no-no because of where the discussion will inevitably lead.

Effectively there'll be an implicit ban.

The best case scenario would be to allow the intended discussion and warn users who start to stray off topic, but that would mean way too much work for the moderators to be practical.

There needs to be a balance, closing the thread before any discussion can commence is a bad way to go about it in my opinion.

it was a religious thread end of. so closing it was the right decision. it should have been open in the religion forum where those people care about those things, it wasnt for AH.

The thread wasn't specifically religious. It was about a religious person's statement regarding a vote about a public interest issue.

More than anything it was a current affairs thread, as are 50% of the posts in AH.

The closure of threads is pretty much subjective, as far as I can see.

Individual mods are going to have different tolerances as to what threads might be epic and what will be cluster fcuks (99% of threads fall somewhere in the middle).

I think the best case scenario is if there's an open thread, and a poster's point is on topic, it should be posted in that thread.
It makes for a neater forum and a more streamlined debate.

I agree, and I guess that's where the crux of the issue lies. As you said it's entirely subjective.

If there's a discussion on the dangers/benefits of marijuana and the Taoiseach comes out to say medical marijuana will be legalised I see them as two separate topics. One a debate on marijuana and the other a news thread about changes in marijuana law.

I'm guessing others (you?) would disagree.

Right, so you didn't post in the thread but you just thought you'd take a pop at me for not having a sense of humour about animal abuse and you're posting sarcastic faces, Jeez talk about ironic. Maybe you could find something more productive to do with your time.

You believed those were serious suggestions?
You'd be amazed at how many animals end up in rescues or dead from that kind of animal abuse, usually because people find it funny to do that kind of thing. It wouldn't be the first time I've found a cat covered in bleach or one thats been hit with stones. So no, I don't have a sense of humour about that kind of thing and letting it go unchecked just encourages the kind of mouthbreather that enjoys tormenting animals.

    {imagination/internet talk} -- reality

you probably need to get your head around this notion. and why did I pick you earlier?, because you became the poster girl for the kind of people who dont get AH and who piss me off, sorry I picked you but when I saw your post the "oh and another thing" went off in my head. anyway this is a feedback thread, not a place to keep this going about this one incident take it to PM if you want to discuss it with me further

It wasn't about people, it was about cats and idiots suggesting blasting a cat with bleach or castrating it with bricks or generally abusing the animal is neither funny or an excuse to do nothing because it isn't posted in the Animal forum. Crock of crap mods, crock of crap. It would have been better if ye just fessed up that ye were all out enjoying the sun and couldn't be arsed to mod yesterday:P

I'm sorry to point this out to you, but you are the very same person who had no sympathy with a woman who was raped because she dared to go to India. You said:
If people want to head off alone to India or other countries with notoriously high rates of rape and then decide to go off with a stranger, fine. But rape is a distinct possiblity. It might not happen but if it does there's no point crying about it afterwards.

So IM0 is actually right in what he is saying, you want us to mod when it suits you, if you are offended then it should be actioned, but you should be able to talk about a rape victim how you please. I'm sorry, but it doesn't work like that. Like SR said, if the comments were made about a person, noone would have cared.

Seachmall I'm sorry to pull out your posts here, but can you see why modding might be difficult at times when just one poster says this:

Essentially AH should be less about whether or not Catholic Teachers are dole leachers and more about finding out how to stop your housemate from killing you.

But then can't understand why another thread on abortion, and one that with a couple of posts had already turned to a catholic bashing thread, wasn't allowed.

Abortion is a very current subject for this country - people are commenting on it every single day, so to allow a thread each time a different person says anything about abortion would fill the front pages of AH with the same old crap and it would seem from reading the feedback thread here, and it the feedback forum, that that is exactly why people are getting fed up with AH. I 100% stand by my decision to close that thread.

My point isn't about that thread in particular. It's about the reason for closing it. It was preemptive. It was closed because it shared a general theme with other hotly debated and well drawn-out threads. Even though the topic of discussion was unique it wasn't allowed because of what it would probably descend into.

That suggests an effective ban on any new threads which share a common controversial theme with other threads even if their topic of discussion is different. Most threads on AH would fall into that implicit ban.

As you pointed out I prefer the less serious topics but that doesn't mean I want AH to completely void of serious ones. There have been interesting discussions here around serious topics.

If I wasn't clear in my previous post, I apologise. The thread wasn't closed pre emptively. The thread was closed for the two reasons stating in my closing post.

    1. There are many abortion threads already open, they have been done over and over and over - there is no need for another one however posters are more than welcome to add new comments to the most recent thread.

    2. It was about religion, based on the feedback we have gotten, we will be directing religious threads to the religious forums.

Whoopsy way to hold a grudge. You didn't agree with my opinion in a previous thread so decide to throw it back in my face in this one; stay professional:D Incidentally the reason why most women don't report rapes is because they know that if they go through a trial they will be sujected to a whole other level of violation by the defendants legal team, who will pick through her life looking for evidence of promiscuity, not because other people feel that going off with a stranger is a bloody stupid thing to do. There will always be strong opinion that women should have some modicum of common sense with regard to their personal safety. Rape is never justified. We don't live in a perfect Utopia, we live in a world where predators prey on the vulnerable given the opportunity. So keep your over-simplistic moral outrage for someone who cares.

There was no grudge, so no need for the paranoia. It is very recent, and the thread is still on the front page so quite a current example to illustrate Super-Rush's point. Some folk will have a conniption fit at jokes (and that's all they were) about animals, but won't show the same outrage - or even respect - to humans. It's a funny old world, and if we even attempted to mod everything that could be offensive to someone, we may aswell shut the site down to be honest.

Anyway pumpkinseeds - if you are unable to post civilly, please don't post at all.

    Let's move on folks.

Cartoon violence of such sort is considered funny and often found in children's shows. (Tom & Jerry, Roadrunner, Bugs Bunny, Simpsons), but is not taken seriously as a form of motivation to enact on such suggestions. There can be humor in the idea, doesn't mean people consider there to be a presence of humor in the action.
