Funny that this comes out not long after I ask Wibbs about the same question... of course, the article doesn´t really give any answers.

I think the Neanderthal is already the most mentioned and discussed prehistoric animal around here...

Humans will eat humans if they are hungry enough.

Cannibalism is rare because individuals from the same species tend to be well matched in terms of offensive and defensive capability. So humans could only eat similar species when they have overwhelming technical advantages, otherwise the risks would be too great.

Inuit dogs eat 400Kg of meat + fat a year.

Another order of magnitude figure is 1Kg per human per day.
Factor in the bits you can't use, food spoilage etc. and you have to kill a lot of Neanderthals to live on, even if the were bigger than us. Work out the odds of surviving such an encounter and figure out what your whole life risk was. For a species as a whole a tiny % difference in survival means they win out over generations. For a near-cannibal to survive on meat they'd have to survive hundreds of encounters.

Is there any genetic or other evidence of prion diseases like Kuru which show evidence of this ?
