Drake - Nothing Was the Same

Anyone else hyped for this album? Some of the material that Drake has been dropping recently has been fire - Started from the Bottom, 5am in Toronto, Girls Love Beyonce to name a few amongst a bunch of high-profile features including Poetic Justice on Kendrick Lamar's album and No Lie on 2Chainz's.

Still no release date set yet but it's expected to drop sometime this Summer. He has a talent for writing and anyone who denies this just comes across as a hater to be honest. He isn't afraid to try new things either. Take Care wasn't your typical rap album - it consisted of mainly low-tempo, dark, atmospheric beats - yet it still went on to become double platinum and critically acclaimed. Let's not forget the Grammy for best rap album.

An alleged tracklist was circulated on the net recently but it was later claimed to be false. Drake was pictured with Jay in the studio last week too which only adds to the anticipation.

Best album of the year in the making? Most definitely. Drake has the potential to be one of the greatest. He has already made his mark on rap.

Big Ghost is the funniest person on the internet.

In fairness though, Drake makes some good music as long as you're not expecting golden era stuff.

So...no actual criticism of Drake's music then. Just an over-used photo of Drake in a wheelchair from his Degrassi days, same old, tired and predictable jokes and a Youtube parody video. The Grammy for best-rap album means nothing compared to coming first in a Boards.ie poll

I'll leave with you this quote from the man himself:
I'm hearing all of the jokes, I know that they tryna push me
I know that showin' emotion don't ever mean I'm a pussy
Know that I don't make music for niggas who don't get pussy
So those are the ones I count on to diss me or overlook me

Wow what a lyrical genius, those bars are fire yo.....

Drake will never ever ever have an album of the year. IMO of course but im sure most people agree with me.

Again IMO, but Drake is seriously shite. He is one of the reasons people complain that there aint good rap music anymore (even though there is). He is one of the muppets on the radio passing shite pop music across as rap.

**** outta here. Tired and predicatble? That Big Ghost stuff is brilliant and original. Show respect to a true word smith!
"Nigga wasn't born yo... he was blossomed."

Drake is definitely not a bad rapper, and I enjoy some of his guest appearances (I don't care what anybody says, Pop That by French Montana is a brilliant song - as long as you cut out French Montana's parts).

However, anything I've heard of his solo stuff is just straight up vagina. It's the only way I can describe it - it's soft, mushy, made for an audience which pre-predominately possess vaginas, and with content that is a far from subtle attempt to manipulating the easily manipulated into giving him vagina.

Now I've never listened to much from him, so I'm sure he might occasionally surprise me with some actual good music, but as a gay man, quite frankly I'd rather not wade through all the vagina to try and find it.

If we decide at the end of the year to have a Hip Hop forum awards I will be nominating this as the comment of the year. Big Ghost would be proud.

There is nothing about that new Drake song that I like.
Not hard on the ears or anything, but it's pretty much taking what is popular beat-wise and subject matter wise (being rich) and getting 2 average rappers to appear on it.

The only thing about Sept 17th I'm looking forward to is GTA5 :)

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 62 ✭✭NoNewFriends

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I respectfully disagree Boom Bap. Listeners like to connect with their favourite rapper and hear anecdotes about their lives. This is partly why 2pac was so popular, he wore his heart on his sleeve and you could follow the trials and tribulations of his life through his music. Ditto with Eminem. Nobody wants to hear invented made-up crap like Rick Ross who likes to play drug dealer.

In this song Drake reveals how he banged his babysitter (he had previously alluded to this in interviews) and how he used to visit his father in jail (Daddy was in jail/we was talking through the window like a mother****ing drive-thru). My only criticism of the song is that it shouldn't have had so many features. We want to hear more bars from Drizzy.

A lot of you are missing out on some really great music due to your stubborn hating on Drake. The rest of the world obviously disagrees with you.
    • Drake won the Grammy for best rap album last year, beating other artists such as Rick Ross, Lupe Fiasco, The Roots and even the mighty Nas (major respect for Nas. Life is Good was actually my favourite album of last year).
    • He secured the Number 19 spot on the "Top 50 Worldwide Tours" list thanks to his Club Paradise Tour.
    • He has officially set the record for most number one singles (10 total) on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Chart, beating Jay Z, Kanye and whoever else.
    • He became a rap phenomenon from a damn mixtape before his debut album even dropped.

I don't hate on Drake, I actually quite like his first album, and can take or leave his second.
I understand that people have a connection with him, just not me. I don't think that he has evolved much musically. I like artists of any genre of music to build on their earlier work rather that re-hash the same stuff over again.

But I do completely understand that yourself NoNewFriends and countless others do have any affinity for Drake, and I don't bear any grudges over it.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 62 ✭✭NoNewFriends

Again, I respectfully disagree. If you're going to bash Drake by claiming he hasn't evolved musically then you need to back it up with examples. His second album couldn't have been more different than his first. The beats on Take Care were darker, minimalistic and of a slower tempo. The title track with Rihanna is the perfect example. Drake's music doesn't suffer from over-production like some other artists (*cough*Kanye) and he doesn't need all the bells and whistles that Yeezus had, for example, which resulted in intolerable noise. Name another rap album similar to it, cos I can't think of any.

If you want to know what I mean by the minimalistic style have a listen to this - .
    Shot For Me

im a kinda big drake fan but ffs that track with 2chainz and big sean is aload of sh*t, drakes stuff is just becoming repetitive ,talking about money and sh*T like that !! i never heard drake do a harmony as clean cut as he has done on this new track, kind of irritating !! the only thing im looking forward to about this album is the track james blake produced

    • Drake won the Grammy for best rap album last year, beating other artists

winning a grammy does not mean you are the best in the industry (the best in maintstream hip pop maybe ) ,
out of all the class hip hop albums released in 2012
this is the best the grammy's could come up with for nomination
    2 Chainz – Based on a T.R.U. Story
Lupe Fiasco – Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1
    Nas – Life Is Good
    Rick Ross – God Forgives, I Don't
    The Roots – Undun

I mean 2 chainz, drake and rick ross in the top 5 , Albums of 2012 , you gotta be kiddin me.

now take a look at the grammy nominees over the past couple of years
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Rap_Album
    last 5 winners

    same trype different year
look at the last couple of "best rap song "
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Rap_Song

    its all about marketing
and before you say , being popular does not mean it good (its means it markets the best )

example ......is the x factor the best show on TV " hell no"
is mcdonald's food the nicest food in the world "hell no"

so drake winning a grammy means dick all to the rap music industry .

That Shot For Me is hardly minimilistic, have you not heard the drum sequences in it? That's some pretty complex programming.
If you want to listen to minimilistic music, listen to D'Angelo where track are stripped down and simplified purposefully.

Or if you want minimalistic Hip Hip, just look at Sage Francis' slam tracks, or spoken word which is as minimalistic as it gets.

And if you want me to riddle out albums off the top of my head that are similar to Drake's but better, let me see:

    Childish Gambino - Camp
Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap
    Anything by Astronautalis
    Dessa - Parts Of Speech
    Dessa - Castor, The Twin

Should I continue....I'm pretty much just rattling off albums where the artist raps and sings and has different tempo's to thier music. Which is essentially all that Drake does.

When I say he doesnt change, his rapping style, his delivery, his singing all sounds pretty much the same.....maybe his singing has improved.

And I would like to remind you that I am not bashing him, I'm giving my honest assessment, and I will re-iterate, I like his first album.

Doesn't Drake pretend to be all tough now, talking about "catching bodies". That is made up, fake crap right there. And he tries to put a tough spin on his upbringing which was quite privileged from what I've seen.

I would put him right beside Rick Ross as one of the worst things to happen to hip hop.

I wouldn't. Much like Rick Ross, I thnk he's a good reminder to fans that rappers make a lot of **** up and they shouldn't be taken at face value.

Otherwise though, his music is still straight vagina.

Yep, that's the new Drake track that has surfaced.

I think that its excellent. I was a fiend for early Jodeci, Teddy Riley, Bobby Brown and this is quite the throwback to that era.
I'd say that the Drive soundtrack inspired this a bit as well.

Just watched a few videos from the OVO fest yesterday. The performance with Drake and Kanye (performing his old stuff) was a highlight. Who else but Drake could bring Kanye, Lil Wayne, J Cole, TLC and Diddy together? The man is a living legend. I don't know if anyone here has ever spent any extended period of time in Toronto but you can't begin to comprehend how much love the city has for Drake.

Drake is the future and anyone dismissing his music just sounds like our grandparents complaining about modern dance music. Everybody in hip-hop respects guys like LL Cool J - he's an OG and a pioneer - but he dropped an album recently and it flopped. Same will happen to the likes of Jay Z eventually. Yeah he was relevant in the past, but now he comes across as a middle-aged man trying to hog the limelight, producing garbage. Retire with dignity and make room for the new school (Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole etc)
