VoIP with Mobile Internet

Anyone know if a mobile internet stick like the ones from Vodafone, O2, etc. could work with a single VoIP phone without any issues. I am doing a bit of travelling and am planing on bringing my phone with me. I have all the necessary adapters to put the USB stick onto Cat5e.

Has any one ever tried it before? What kind of speeds should I be looking for with a VoIP phone and what should I be getting from the mobile internet.

P.S. its an office VoIP phone, not Skype, etc.

All seems very complicated - could you not just get the settings for your voip provider and use an app on your mobile?

If you're on android, it has the functionality built in (not sure about other devices). If you open up your dialer > hit settings > internet call settings accounts > add account

I have done it on a three connection and the quality was like a standard mobile call. You should use a low bandwidth codec when connecting to your provider.

Vodafone do block the use of voip so be sure to check your provider and that they fully allow it.

Have a look at G729 as a codec.
Unlike G.711, it is able to transmit voice very efficiently--at about 32 kilobits per second versus 87 kilobits per second for G.711.

I use CSipSimple for Android, I have 3 extensions running on my mobile. It works well on Three network.

I was living in An Cheathrú Rua in Galway for a year about four years ago. I had a "fixed" 3g router, and Blueface VoIP worked very well over it. Never any issues.

For android i would suggest CSIPSimple, SIPDroid or MizuDroid.
All are free and unlocked (so you can set them to work with any VoIP provider)
