poor garden soil - what are my options

I have grown 5 types of veg ina propogator and they are ready to transfer.. but the landlord tells me the garden soil is awful because of the apple trees in the back.

I am thinking that i need a large planter.. what are my options, inexpensive would be better.

that sounds wrong on so many levels ! (do you need to edit that post ?)
What about buying a few bags of compost and digging them in ?
I often just buy the peat (cheaper) and add a bit of fertiliser (dig it all in using a hand held cultivator rather than a fork as it is a bit quicker and I just go down 9 inches or so).

Does your landlord mean the soil is bad or that it can't be worked on account of the apple tree roots?
Do you have enough light?

Plenty of light, just the apple tree roots take over the garden so i am thinking about a planter.

You mean the soil can't be worked or that it is nutritionally depeted (any soil an be improved or replaced)?

What is a planter? Is it a large container? How big ?

Are you going to make it yourself?

Can you make a raised bed?
