Anyone have any idea what happens to a pedestrian laneway when it is closed off to the public for good?

As in a laneway between two housing estates etc ?

If that's it,,most are gated, and left closed,,and some are closed off with a brick wall.

There was one off Connolly Road in Ballyphehane,,and they actually build a house where the laneway used to be.
