I worked in a takeaway until recently and the drivers weren't paid minimum wage, it was about 5 euro per hour + 2.50 per delivery. Minimum wage obviously didn't apply here either considering they were paid in cash at the end of the night. I'm not saying tips should or shouldn't be given, just suggesting that people using the premise that drivers are paid well for what they do might want to reconsider!

Is this a second job for many drivers?

I cant speak for all the drivers but for me it was my only job.till i got a new one that is.

So the 3:50 per delivery. Are you contractors or employees? It seems like they must be using a loop hole.

I don't think I have ever tipped in Ireland.

Defo a loophole but i was there as a contractor. They would have loads of drivers on cause they didnt care bout the drivers they only wanted pizza delivered on time.
And you were only allowed to take a maximum of 2 deliveries even if there was 3 deliveries ordered on the same street.was a horrible place to work

Well if they are paid in cash I guess we can consider the tax they are not paying and the dole they are probably drawing as the tip.

    Or you could tip.

Almost always unless the service is bad or the person lacks basic manners.

it all depends for myself if there is a service charge and the service is bad there will be no tip from myself.but if its good i will throw a few quid in.

If there is no service charge will always tip how big the tip,is up to the ppl who are serving the food

And you probably noticed yourself that when an address known for tipping pops up the screen, the drivers are climbing over each other to take it. I only did the job for three or four months but I always tip now, because I know I'm much more likely to get the food faster.

For table service I always tip unless the meal is late or the service rude

Not the one where i worked.i will give them credit for that one they worked it on the basis of next up takes next delivery whether they tip or not

The tax that they'd be paying on the extraordinarily high salary they're earning?! And as for the dole comment: none of the drivers I knew were using the job to secretly earn money, unfortunately it wasn't as conspiratorial as you would like to think!:)

I generally do tip. The amount of the tip depends on the quality of the service.

I even tried to tip in Burger King and McDonalds. The Burger King attempt happened in Dublin years ago and the McDonalds attempt happened in the U.S. more recently. On both occasions the person serving was dealing with behaviour above and beyond the call of duty. On both occasions the person serving refused the tip saying it was against company policy. On both occasions the person serving gave me the most wonderful smile. Made my days.

I work in IT Support. Any time I get a call from someone new I always go to them immediately and do everything I can to try and fix the problem. If they don't tip I usually take a day or two to get to them the next time even if there are no other calls.
    Not true.

Under no circumstances do I tip anyone.

Hardest working man in the kitchen is the kitchen porter and they see no tips.

Carrying plates, taking orders and clearing tables is piss easy work in comparison and they get the tips

    I've done both jobs

    Rubbish analogy.

The excuses for sheer greed here are appalling.

In the US all tips are shared with staff on that night.

Yep, always tip delivery people, and taxis. When out for a meal we usually split the tip to make paying easier(ie say theres 4 of us, meal comes to €74 I tell them all to pop €20 up and leave the rest as a tip).

I always tip...taxi drivers, takeaway delivery drivers, waiting staff. My dad tips crazy amounts, he once tipped a barmaid $50 because she had big cans. Got the silent treatment off my mam for the next 24 hours.

Used to tip taxis more often then not.

Having the chat and the banter and I was happy. Round up to the nearest euro or so, not a huge tip but it was something.

Have the hailo app linked to my credit card now and don't handle cash with the taximan so that ended the tipping.

There is a feature on Hailo to select a percentage but I'd never use it.

Really depends i don't mind tipping some people. I usually once a week get a domino's and it depends on who delivers. Their is two men who get the change out quick and are polite and i tip them. Their is others who look at the money and very slowly get their change looking for a tip so i don't tip them.

I really dont understand tipping the delivery guy. Their job is to bring the food to your door, take the money and move onto the next place. They are paid to do this. Waiter/ress is at least providing a service and if they are above average or it is a large group then yes, I would tip them.

So there are people who don't tip at restaurants?

If the service is not exceptional then you can be sure I won't tip. Why would anybody do so?
