ADSL compatible routers ok for "VDSL"?

Hi all,

I keep seeing mention of VDSL in relation to the new fibre rollouts from Magnet and Eircom.

I picked up a new Linksys WRT610N two weeks back to combat the really poor router provided by Magnet, which was unable to deal with traffic to my NAS and Raspberry PI.

That is now all resolved thankfully. But I'm just wondering, I keep seeing this VDSL mention, and with FatPipe shortly down the line for me, did I just spunk out on a router that will incompatible shortly, or is it just an advent of DSL ( Similarly to how DSL > ADSL , yet specs will only reference DSL)

A Linksys WRT610N does not have a built in ADSL modem, as in you don't connect it directly to the phone line.

In general terms an ADSL modem will not work at VDSL speeds, however the provider will normally provide a modem. You can then connect the modem to the WRT610N. In general terms that device is quite good as they go. I use open source software on mine and it performs well. In general terms you should however try to wire the house with Cat6 cable as Wifi will struggle in the future with fast speeds.

I have Cat 6 going throughout the house

I bought this router as the provided Thompson Technicolor by Magnet literally couldn't deal with data transfer to my NAS.

Since using the Linksys above, my NAS is fine. But so is the ADSL connection. It has an ADSL port for the line from the phonesocket, and outbound internet is working fine ......

Am I doing something wrong here?

I thought that model has no ADSL port. It has a WAN port. Either way if you get VDSL in the future you can continue to use it, assuming it has a WAN port.

It has a WAN port, and it has a DSL port, have both from the looks of it. Definitly has a DSL port anyway.

And yeah there is "VDSL" coming with the whole fatpipe thing. Main concern is ZERO confidence in ISP hardware, in fairness any cheapy piece of **** should be able to manage traffic to a NAS...

the only one I have seen so far that supports ADSL, VDSL and WAN in one box is the Vodafone Huawei HG658c....

Hmmmmm, might have to do the old bridging then when the new router comes, still would rather have only one router, then having two in the network : /

I got efiber and the reception is god awful off it can hardly reach the bedrooms below the router. How would I go about bridging it to my old Belkin D600 router. The Belkin doesn't have a wan port just the 4 lan and one adsl?
