When I'm on the bike I'm constantly stopping to answer natures call. Which is fine when I'm on my own. If there's 8000 people on a busy road this could cause a problem. :D

I find its a lot more seedy and guilty doing it on own, checking over shoulders almost afraid to get caught.

Throw in 7999 fellow cyclists flying by and not a bother. Does that make me an exhibitionist?

Anyways, there are towns/villages every 20 odd km. Plenty of garages and pubs and cafes to be stopping into.

Has anyone got their ROK jersey yet? I ordered mine few weeks back

Yep,gotta it delivered via the good people at An Post yesterday (initial order made on 23rd April).Very nice indeed.
Got a large jersey,as requested,VERY tight fit around stomach and arms compared to other brands (even though I'm a slim 12.5st,33'' waist with 13.5'' upper arm circumference)

I'm looking for accommodation in Killarney for the ROK. Have I left it too late to get reasonably priced accommodation? Will I have to shake down my piggybank to stay overnight.
Any advice / info greatly received.

Booking.com or Hotels.com should cover most establishments in the killarney area but it's a long shot. Your best bet is a cancellation, the RoK weekend is usually choc-a-bloc.

If you're on your own you're pretty screwed. A mate of mine was looking for a single room for this just last week and the cheapest he could get was €300. I managed to change from a twin to a triple room in the Killarney Court, so they may still have some accomodation. Worth checking them out, they're very sound to deal with over the phone.

Also hostelbookers.com and hostelworld.com. Checked there and a few hostels have rooms from €15 and up. But you'd want to book them fairly quickly.

If u travelling by car.... don't be afraid to look outside Killarney by 4-5 miles.

There are plenty of BB's more rural situated - so you could either load up the bike on a rack and drive in. OR ..you could cycle in and home.

For further afield... there as a few towns like Killorglin, Farranfore or even Tralee to name just 3.

Are you looking to stay on the Fri or Sat night or both? Did a few searches and for Fri there are still some rooms available at the EUR100 ish rate in various places in town. Saturday night however is a different deal.

    Did a rough 52km today.

The hills are a killer. I have serious doubts if I'll be able to do 180km for the ROK.

Is there a bus that picks up people who can't finish it! :o

Their was a delay in some of the stock arriving, but majority were posted out on Friday last. I ordered mine in April also, along with a jacket. The jerseys were in, but they were waiting on the jacket to arrive.
Also being sold in Kerry Outdoor Sports along with water-bottles (8euros). I was told that the jerseys were on the small side :)

That's why i decided not to do it - opted for the wicklow 100km instead on june 9.

if you keep doing the hills training, the flat will take care of itself on the day.

How are you getting on in comparison to the chart I quoted here. Some days I think about this cycle and would be bricking it; convincing myself I won't be able to complete what is a huge challenge for me! Other days then I look at this chart and see myself on target in comparison with that and hear words of conviction from people and I can actually see myself completing it.

Oh I wish this weren't my first year cycling The Ring of Kerry! My back gives me grief at times and both legs too when under extreme stress/pressure so I've an up-hill climb some days before I even start to pedal.

Hope the training is going well for everyone reading in here though! Looking forward to seeing and meeting you throughout the days cycle :)

The most I've cycled is 45km last week. I think I'll be grand. Play football during the week. Haven't really hit many hills with the cycling, but it's not a race, so if you pace yourself out it should be grand i'd say. My biggest fear is the bike breaking down.

I'd still say try get upto being able to 80 km cycle . Think getting your ass ready for along day in saddle is nearly as important:D

Haha you're not wrong to be honest. Sitting down isn't the problem, it's the standing up that is a killer. I may as well be sitting on a rose bush. Might invest in the gel shorts before July!

I found if you could get a few spins of 50km of uphill climbs into your legs few weeks before ROK you will be fine on the day.

Jaysus h chr#%t 45 km training without shorts, go straight home this evening and buy a pair. :eek:It will make huge difference, comfort on the day is big thing.

Anyone who hasn't done this before should spend more time looking forward to being a part of a great day/night rather than worrying about whether you can finish.

I did it last year for the first time 4 weeks after I bought my bike, got home is a reasonable time and enjoyed the vast vast majority of it.

Its hard to explain but you'll get into the day and be glad you are a part of the day when you see and feel the camaraderie amongst supporters/stewards/cyclists/helpers etc.

Sign up, pay a few bob to a good charity and get out a few times on your bike between now and then. On the day there will be someone to help you no matter what happens, personally I've got plenty practice changing tyres so I have no problem stopping and helping out some guy/gal who looks to be in trouble. It will be that sort of day.

Also one more small tip, Molls gap is nothing like what some people make it out to be. Its long but not at all steep, the smell of burgers and beer in Killarney got me over it last year.

Just on their facebook page huge numbers have registered so they are limiting numbers for health and safety reasons so anyone who hasn't registered better get your skates on. Can't say i'm surprised. #notunexpected.

Haven't really been following the training plan, just trying to get out often and stepping up the miles each weekend spin.

Did 70km yesterday in about 3.5 hrs including a few hills and still had a bit left in the tank, so as it's approaching I feel more and more like I'll be ready for it :D

For me my biggest fear is having an accident. Not used to cycling in groups and all it takes is one person to go down to bring many more down with them. There surely must be a few accidents each year? Would be gutted after doing all the training to go down just outside Killarney :o
