The main thing that impressed me about the ps4 specs was 8gb ddr5. That's a lot of ddr5
Have they said if the xbox will use all ddr5 or will it be a mix of dd3 and ddr5?

If I was to guess I'd say its 8GBs of just DDR3, but I read, and don't quote me on this that they keeping almost half of that for the OS alone. Wouldn't surprise me either seeing some of the stuff they showed today.

    Wouldn't DDR3 cripple the APU? In the same way a DDR3 7770 is much slower than a DDR5 7770

But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says.

"The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One," he said. "They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live."

"They would be paying the same price we paid, or less?" we asked.
"Let’s assume it’s a new game, so the answer is yes, it will be the same price," Harrison said.

The xbox has to have some sort of ddr5 for the graphics or it will really cripple the gpu with low bandwidth ddr3.

An awful mistake if microsoft went this route.

It's 8gb of DDR3 + 32MB of ESRAM, from what I've read the combination won't be as powerful as the GDDR5 in the PS4.

THE Custom APU'S are pretty similar tho with 8 jaguar cores and a 7970m which is equivalent to a 7850/7870.

I don't think the Jaguar APU is on par with the 7970m, it's based on it but has be cut back a bit.

Yep just had another look the PS4 is packing the 7970m, Xbox One points to a mobile 7770 equivalent :/

    Edit:
Also its a Custom APU with 8 jaguar cores not a stock AMD design

So it seems the ps4 is packing by far the better hardware. If they can keep the price similar then it's a home run for Sony, especially with Microsoft's digital protection making it impossible to buy 2nd hand games or borrow games off friends, or rentals.

The built in kinect is microsoft's counter but for gamer's is that enough? Will companies even use the ps4's better hardware or resort to the lowest common denominator.

DDR3 will cripple the already weaker gpu's power. Look at how the A10's 5800k's gpu performance is boosted a lot with higher speeds of ddr3 showing how much higher speed ram benefits the gpu.

IT seems it will use a proprietary hard drive too, but will support external storage.

Assuming people buying it know anything at all about the inards, which isn't the case. Friend of mine for example loves his PS3, you point at a computer case and ask him what it is, and he says "the CPU". It'll come down almost entirely to marketing, features, and price. With 90% of their sales hardware will mean nothing. People will simply understand that for €300 they an get X which does 3D, and play some of their old games, or €350 for the other console to play things in 3D, and make them a sandwich, or whatever the case may be.

True that. That's where microsoft will gain an advantage. A lot of bs marketing to convince people to pay them monthly fees for the pleasure of playing their €60 games online.

Is there any videos of anything that looks truly next gen yet? Everything I've seen so far looks current or last gen in higher res or is pre rendered. Even the likes of killzone which is normally a graphics benchmark for the ps doesn't look a patch on crysis 3 on pc.

I guess it was never going to.

The xbox coming with kinect as standard is a good idea though. At least developers might spend some time coming up with some interesting ways of using it. You might even see some game types you wouldn't normally see on a console like rts and mmo games with the addition of voice commands and movement based ones.

    Pre-rendered, but:

Looks like UE4, but I could be wrong. (Me likie dragons. :))

    Leaked 780 review.

~10% slower than a Titan, MSRP of $650/€599. Still rumour until tomorrow afternoon though.

    ....

    More info here.

I thought the Furmark & 3D mark temps would be lower than 80 deg C though?

More here on techpowerup, apparently the distributor price to retailers is $644.44-they think $650-700 retail.

Link works for me. The 80°C temperatures are down to GPU Boost, and really, they're not all that bad. At least you know the card is really working. (i.e. it could run at 65° if it didn't boost as high, etc.)
