They sometimes waive the parking charges when there are events happening, any chance they'll do that tomorrow?

Good question, but I guess Bus/DART/Cycle will be the best way to travel there, due to the expected crowds (with their cars).

She's on the move, just south of Arran at the moment, up in the Clyde. Lovely place to sail :). The people on boaard are lucky bunnies.

Ahem that was for the White Star Line the competition to Cunard at the time, and that was an operator error not a design defect

    Life Boats
    Cheap rivets
    Progressively lower bulk heads

    They weren't design problems?

Hence my carefully worded references to owners. White Star and Cunard merged.

Besides, it was only a dig at Chuck's sour grapes.

I was in DL this morn, the ship doesn't look that big or impressive - just far away (cue father ted quote). Lots of tourists with big cameras getting hailed on!

Well if you want to see an Ocean liner there isn't any bigger.

I think I'm correct in saying that she is even bigger than the Titanic?

although I am open to correction.

It accommodates over 30,000 people at a time! I can't even get my head around how enormous it must be for that number of passengers and crew, quarters for them all, bars, restaurants, entertainment areas...the mind boggles (well mine does)

QM2 is 25% longer, 70% taller and 300% (!) heavier than Titanic. Titanic wouldnt even feature in the largest 50 passenger ships if she was afloat today

QM2 is currently covered in a veil of rain, maybe leave it till this afternoon if you want to see her, she departs at 5.30pm

Just here for the one day though . . . .

That's an old pic, I saw that a few weeks ago. Think it was shot in Wales.

Haven't seen a pic of the ship at DL yet other than the distant one on RTE news.

30,000!!! are ya mad. It accommodate about 4000 including crew. I saw it a few years ago in Dunmore East. Its impressive but not the largest liner in the world. Have a look at this -

Not as elegant as the QM2 though.

There is a difference apparently between a cruise liner and an ocean liner. The QM is the largest ocean liner, but not cruise ship.

Yeah I think I may have mis-read something somewhere...I think it is 30,000 people in total from the 14 cruise ships they are expecting. No wonder I couldn't get my head around the size of it :D:o

I saw 'Allure of the Seas' close up and yes shes longer by 17 metres, however she and QM2 are the same height and the liner looks far more imposing in the white over black paint job

She's come from Scotland, so I presume south.

I heard she's heading for Liverpool. Sitting at anchor in Dublin bay at the moment though. (Going by http://www.marinetraffic.com anyway).

They are retiring cruise ships bigger than the titanic because they are too small.

Ahem that was for the White Star Line the competition to Cunard at the time, and that was an operator error not a design defect
Actually it was both. The list of operational errors was as long as it was severe, but there were design and structural issues too:

For example: The material used to make the rivets for the steel plates were only cast iron. And not the best material either, too much slag.
Also there were a considerable number of safety features that Thomas Andrews wanted on the ship:
    1. Full double-hull
    2. Higher water-tight bulkheads
    3. More lifeboats, by a factor of three.
But for reasons of cost or grandiosity, none of these were allowed into the design.
