Installing Aux Input to Stereo on 2006 Mazda 3

    Never done anything like this with a car before. I want to install an aux input for the stereo on my 2006 Mazda 3 and was wondering if anyone could tell me if there are any problems with my plan? Got most of my info here

    1 - Remove head unit like this

    2 - Purchase and install something like this into the back of it

    3 - Purchase 3.5mm stereo male plug one end and 3.5mm stereo female plug the other end, like this

    4 - This is what I'm not sure about, where do I route the aux input to? Do I drill a hole somewhere and then its just dangling there?

    You can drill using the empty tape deck (see picture) or have a cable fed to the glove box or arm rest but I personally like at the cigarette lighter idea (second picture).

    A member here @jenizzle gave me good information on this when I had my Mazda 6 as she did it in her Mazda RX-8. I don't think she'd mind me quoting her :)
    I had to remove my radio - which is a b*tch of a job to do in the rex! My right arm was scratched to bits getting at a bolt that was in behind the dash...

    ...I then ran the cable into the armrest/drinks holder. I had to remove the centre console to get the radio out anyway so it wasn't any extra hassle. I can just hide my mp3 player in there and it's out of the way now, dead handy! Sound quality-wise, it's great. Much better and more reliable than using an FM transmitter.

    My dashboard looks more like http://images.canadianlisted.com/nlarge/mazda3-04-oem-stock-deck-head-unit_5547190.jpg. I think I will go for the somewhere near the cigarette lighter like you've shown, looks neater and can be hidden when needs be. Once I have it open I might see if I can run it to the arm rest, I don't think I have to remove the arm rest to get the stereo out on the Mazda 3 though. Thanks

    Even better and good to know, the armrest will offer protection / security for your phone / MP3 as well.
