I'm not quite sure what to answer, but my answer is probably no for now.

The British didn't offer us a new flag in the north, there is no green in the union jack and while I think it would be nice of us to offer I still don't think unionists would accept it. Generally speaking, they are like the only people to go on about being ''British'' more than the English themselves. While the Scottish are Scottish the Irish are Irish and so on.
armaghbhoy, you are one of the best people to tell us for real what are the chances of any sort of UI in our lifetime, What are your gut feelings on the issue - especially among young people? ... I would think its getting less and less likely as the peace process takes hold.

No, I want the Tri colour to stay. It makes for great colours when you light it on a bonfire and there is plenty of them. So why get rid of it?

This is the class of person we're trying to parley with and bring into the fold of a united Ireland.

    ----

The north is Britain's problem at the moment and unless there is a serious upturn in social cohesion up there I say let them keep it. No need to make their problems our own. Riots over a flag being taken down, riots over marches, riots over everything. The hatred runs so deep in places that it's hard to comprehend it. I know a lot of people from the north..all good people but in all honesty the place is a sh1thole...the minority is way too vocal there and ruin it for everyone.

if they hate us so much

Ah yes, I remember the hordes of pissed droolers out wrapped in union flags with vomit on their shirts banging bin lids together.

Some culture that is to be jealous of alright.

Some battle that was won in the 17th century, celebrated by burning irish flags, pictures of the pope, statues of jesus' mother, the usual capour you would expect from them

That is the culture of youth today. I sadly agree with you on the drinking and getting into a right mess. Still, many people don't do it and enjoy the night. Its a good time to get together and socialise with other Protestants.

Late 70's early eighties actually. Still the same only less at it.

Great fun alright to get together and celebrate hating the Irish and being born a Protestant by vomiting all over a union fleg.

Is it any wonder normal unionists increasingly want to distance themselves from that shite.

Those things have nothing to do with unionism. At all.

Well that is not exactly right. Back then they had a more dignified stance on Alcohol, although not perfect, I would say not to the utter mess it is now in young people.

I think it is something which should be discussed more in society. And I would say it is fun to get together and have a sing and a dance. No harm done, Republicans do it too in parades. Let people enjoy themselves.

Sure, if you mean upper class Unionism or the ideal of Unionism. But parades or bonfire gatherings all over Ulster are attended by many Unionists.

You can do whatever you want, we will not be forced into watching you do it. As they say...get a room.;)

The only thing I know about the North aside from the troubles of course is the 'vibe' I get from watching the BBC local news on BBC NI and a couple of NI friends who now are ex friends who repeatedly treated my friendship like **** when I knew them when living in Dublin.

I have never met such gruff , unsophisticated, unhealthy , argumentative, socially unaware, did I say unhealthy, disloyal, uninspiring, "thick" , bing-drinking, chips & vinegar munchin , lower class ( as a rule ) men that I have ever encountered. I could go on. I would say they were 'natural Irish' if you know what I mean but doesn't make any difference to me.

The idea that the ppl of the south of Ireland would ever have to be associated with the North is a notion that repulses me.

I would join the South_IRA ( fictional ) to keep the north from ever joining the south. In an ideal world the north debacle would not have occurred - but it has and what is left is very unpleasing - so lets just leave them to their own devices. I'd rather not have them sully the true Irish reputation and spirit. I'd rather unite with Liverpool.

Did you ever wonder why you attract the company of such neanderthals?

Btw...have you ever heard such repulsive accents in your life ? Yuck !

    Oh the ironing!

And yes, EVERYONE in the north is exactly how you described... And NOBODY in the south is (not even you)

And as for the accents? Which part exactly is repulsive? Does it cease to be repulsive exactly at the South Down border? Or the Donegal border perhaps?

Please, this 'not everybody' argument is always used when a generalization is used but 'in general' the perception I get from the north is what I have gotten consistently since I was a kid living in the south.

As for 'the north is not the only place that has a repulsive accent' - I agree - I don't particularly care for the Birmingham accent but then I find the Cork/Kerry accent rather endearing. Can't bare the 'real dub' accent either.

I think you rather attacked the trivial parts of my post though - accents are not really the issue : )
