Teachers Council Registration - Further Education what teaching course are approved

    I'm applying for registration under regulation 5 it states:

    For those making application after 01 April 2013, a Council approved
    qualifi cation in post-primary (First Year to Sixth Year) or further education
    teacher education

    However try as I may I cannot find a list of course that would be deemed approved.

    Can anyone shed some light on this please?

    Six courses available:

    • Professional Diploma in Education (Further Education), Open Learning Centre, NUIG
    • Graduate Diploma in Adult & Further Education, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick
    • Postgraduate Diploma in Arts in Learning and Teaching, National College of Ireland, Dublin
    • Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Teaching in Further Education & Adult Education, Waterford Institute of Technology
    • Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching in Further Education, Waterford Institute of Technology.
    • Higher Diploma in Further Education (HDFE), NUIM

    Unless you are already in the system I would think very carefully about paying to do one of these courses. The FE sector is undergoing huge change over the next year or so with solas being set up / vecs merging / ptr changes. There will be a lot of job loses for non permanent staff and permanent staff/ cid staff will in some areas have to shift back to secondary level. In other words - an oversupply of teachers and few jobs.

    Also the secondary PDE/hdip/PGDE is automatically recognised for teaching in the further ed/VEC sector .

    I dont necessarily agree with the comment on having caution when applying for these courses as yes there may be a surplus of teachers, but the adult and continuing education field is expanding and I think teachers trained specifically in this area would be appreciated instead of for example a pe or geography secondary school teacher teaching FETAC. Just a thought.
