I don't doubt he has an injury of some sort. Last season he was the same, not the same pitcher at all.

But do people think that sometimes the DL is used to spare pitchers going through bad periods pride?

No. Teams invest millions in pitchers - they don't put them on the DL to soothe their pride.

And yet again another pitcher hit in the head with a line drive. Nasty.

Is it time they started wearing hard shell helmets? I say yes. I've been saying it for years. What does everyone else think?

They probably should but will they? Probably not. Baseball players are stuck in their ways and would probably resist any attempt to make them compulsary. I know pitching coaches were made wear them a couple of years back after one died in a minor league game but hopefully no pitcher will have to die before the same happens for them.

I was checking out out the game summary on that play and was wondering what's the etiquette for when this happens? Jennings apparently ended up on 3rd base on what would have been at best a single. 2 runs were scores on it too but both probably would have scored on a single anyway but is it right Jennings to keep running when Happ is out cold? I'm not saying it was wrong to keep going but he definitely would have seen what happened Haap.

Off for surgery. Partially torn rotator cuff, frayed labrum, bone spurs in shoulder.

Don't think he was put on the DL for his pride then

Even with replays, the umpires still manage to get a major call wrong.

Yeah saw Buster Olney tweeting about that this morning. Compared it to this where the league overturned a call and decided the remainder of the game would be played at another date. It's funny also!

That missed call night was just stupid though. Serious lack of ability from any of the umpires.

The little known fact about the pine-tar game.......it was home plate umpire, Tim McClelland's, first ever game.

The things you learn - I did not know that. It's arguably one of the most famous incidents in baseball history, and I've read about it and seen the vid innumerable times, but never came across that nugget. Thanks ollie.

I know he started in 83 but I don't think that was his first ever game, do you mean first ever at home plate or first ever in general?

McClelland is also know for having one of the tightest strike zones in baseball..

He was interviewed by the Reds broadcasters early this season when his crew did a series here and he said that it was his first game. It was mid-season, and he had been umping in the minors and was listed as a reserve when one of the umps had to take leave.

He was also behind the plate for the Sammy Sosa corked bat incident.

There is a difference though.....the league cannot overturn a judgement call.

The pine-tar incident was overturned due to a technicallity......even on a video review, the call lastnight is still an umpire's judgement call and can't be overturned by the league office.

Good enough for me so :D

He is never far away from controversy, he used to kneel behind the homeplate too didn't he, as he is so tall :pac:

On a lighter note than blown HR calls, I wonder how this guy got on when he got home!

Is that right? Ah we'll, it had me fooled anyway. I presume the team plants them there then because the couple are hardly going to set it up on the off chance they appear on the kiss cam

Yeah the teams set it up, gets a laugh from the crowd and gets people talking about their day/night at the ball park!

I just wonder.....now that Joe Torre is involved, will the poor abused managers finally get some compassion from the league office.

Good win for the Mets last night, Baxter with a walk of single in the 9th to win the game

I'm happy when they get a win in any game Harvey doesn't start but they didn't play well offensively so when you win after only getting 3 hits in the first 6 innings, it was a good win I suppose.

They are really in trouble though, especially against lefties. They're hitting something like .185 or something against lefties and even worse against them when there's a RISP. And unfortunately I think they're up against another one tonight

Another blown call.....that makes 2 nights in a row.....luckily the Angels ended up winning so the league don't have to deal with the protest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,626 ✭✭✭rockonollie

For the benefit of those that didn't see what happened........

The Astros brought in a reliever who threw some warm-up pitches on the mound, the Angels at the same time announced a pinch-hitter, and then the Astros replaced the reliever who had been warming up.

Mike Scosia went nuts and put the game under protest for an illegal substitution, by rule a pitcher who enters a game must face at least one batter before being replaced, except in the case of injury.

Fortunately for the league, the Angels went on to win so the protest is irrelevant.

The official rule: "If the pitcher is replaced, the substitute pitcher shall pitch to the batter then at bat, or any substitute batter, until such batter is put out or reaches first base, or until the offensive team is put out, unless the substitute pitcher sustains injury or illness which, in the umpire-in-chief's judgment, incapacitates him for further play as a pitcher"

Unlike the home-run call in the Athletics' game, this was a mis-enforced rule and not a judgement call, so if the Angels hadn't won there would be every chance that the game would have had to be replayed from the point of the substitution.

One sided convo today in here......but an update from the MLB official twitter

"Umpire Fieldin Culbreth suspended 2 games, fined for misapplication of Official Baseball Rule 3.05(b) in Thursday's @Angels-@Astros contest."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,801 ✭✭✭Benimar

Not a good week for the Umps.

The missed HR was terrible. Its clear from one look what had happened, so how 3 of them couldn't see it is beyond me.

Last nights one was worse IMO. Even I knew that a pitcher had to pitch to at least one batter

A lot of sports could learn from this, fining umpires because they don't apply the rules correctly - would scare the sh1t out of soccer referees.

On a separate note what about the O's? Seem to be the real deal this year.
