For those of you too young to know any better, Fortycoats was an Irish TV icon back in the early 80's (he was up there with Pat Ingolsby and Aengus McAnally!).

Anyway, I reckon the brits got the idea for Doctor who from seeing Fortycoats. Just look at the facts :

Doctor who had the tardis, fortycoats had the flying sweetshop
Doctor who had various assistants, fortycoats had his trusty female side-kick "slightly bonkers"
Doctor who's greatest enemy was the darleks, fortycoats was always battling the whirlygig witch !

Plus Doctor who was always wearing long scarves.....a classic trick of the one coat enviers !

There's a Wanderly Wagon Forum Santa Clause, you might find your answer there from people more qualified to discuss it. I have a feeling a large proportion of people replying here are too young to remember Forty Coats.

Only one problem - Dr Who was before Forty Coats - so I reckon RTE were the copycats - even had the female assistant - slightly bonkers I beleive she was called

The Doctor would win. If I'm a pedant I think the poll option should be "The Doctor" and not "Doctor Who" but I'm not. No sir...

I do remember thinking alright that RTE were insipired by "Doctor Who" when they were making "Wanderly Wagon" and cast the Irish Doctor as a sort of hobo. I reckon Forty Coats would be a right little tough fighter, the sort of guy who could appear in "Bum Fights" movies. He might appear nice (I met him once and my lucky sister got a prize off him and has a photo of herself with him!) but he'd know how to defend himself. However, Forty Coats would fall before the might of the Doctor's intellect and his sonic screwdriver....

Sonic screwdriver me arse there must be at least one cutthroat razor on those 50 pockets of fortycoats, obviously it would take him a while to figure out where it was but once he got it out bye bye doctor.
also im pretty sure fortycoats would pull some kinda dirty tramp-fighter trick before the fight got under way.
perhaps only wearing 35 coats on the day of the fight& then saying "just let me take my coats off" would give him a couple of seconds advantage on the doctor.
lets not also forget that he would have access to some hillarious novelty products in his shop.

There was a Forty Coats in Dublin, long before Dr. Who and the RTE character. Therefore, he was obviously a time traveller.

should there be a question mark after who in the poll?

going by that logic, was Christy Nana the irish Lovejoy?

I never liked Fortycoats, he wasn't a fellow to be trusted. Always reminded me of Wurzel Gumidge.
