    Hi
Does anyone know if you can do this with the new Horizon box?

    Cheers
    Redman

I don't think you can which is why I will be asking them to only add the new box as a client to my existing network and not a new device.

    Hi

I have the original setting up and have the router "bridged" to my own wireless router.
    As described here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056758726

Does anyone know if you can do this with the new Horizon box?

    Cheers
    Redman

You can connect the box to your existing home network OR use the box as your
    home network.

I had to tell the sales rep that Android has a much higher install and user base than iOS... couldn't give me an answer when I asked why only the iOS apps are available as of right now. Ahh well.

The problem with Android is that there are so many variations with regards screen resolution, memory, CPU etc.

Apple, have very limited differences in screen size and resolution.

there for when you release an app for IOS it is straight forward and east to support, where as with Android you have to test lots of different platforms and versions. its a nightmare to support apps on android compared to IOS.

Having dabbled in development for both platforms this is an excuse that lazy coders use. The newer Android APIs handle alot of the screen stuff themselves automatically without much emphasis on the coder to specify the layout, this has been the case since the Android 3.0 fork and up.

Granted it'd be an issue with older Android devices but then all they have to do is make certain devices non compatible on Google Play Store.

It's a weak excuse to be perfectly honest with you, you'd think they'd want to be hitting the larger install base first instead of going for the niché market.

It's probably as much due to support as development. It's unlikely that anyone out there is testing their apps on every single Android device, so there could be graphical issues or performance problems on lots of devices. I don't think UPC would want a deluge of complaints about the app not working on everyone's particular Android phone/tablet. And you know people would complain about it.

I think it's a pretty good excuse, personally. "Write once, deploy everywhere" is a bit of a crock, IME.

That would Lead to pissing off a far greater number of customers. It also counterdicts your argument about there being more Android having a bigger user base.

What? Hardly, look up the figures. More Android devices than iOS devices out there. On a bus ATM but can post sources when I get home.

No it doesn't - Android phones are selling 10-20% more in the US and they're selling over 3x more worldwide.

Can we not derail the thread with fanboy wars. Who cars if android is outselling iPhone in the US.

I'll ignore the back-seat moderation here and say yes, you can take that discussion to whatever forum allows it.

I thought we were discussing why UPC have ignored Android with a view towards using an app to control the box. ted1 appears to have misinterpreted something somewhere along the line and I was correcting that interpretation.
Hardly a fanboy war, and on point.

Sorry grindle you didn't correct me, you showed me graphs which don't break down the device by, processor, memory, screen resolution, firmware version , custom ROMs etc.

The contradiction occurred when he said to rule out the older versions. But iOS devices are backwards compatible so don't rule them out

Just one bit info to add about the IPhone app - hopefully not too off topic - but some might consider it important -
I've head from someone who tried it that the Horizon Player app wont run on a jailbroken IPhone.

It's a bit annoying that all these companies focus on iOS alright when Android has the higher install (i've always been Android for my phone, but also have an iPad and a Nexus 7 and a Xoom2). The app wouldn't be developed here though so I dont' think the sale staff would give 2 hoots about it tbh! :(

It's still quite a bit easier to develop for iOS because you don't have to take into account umpteen different phone specs and you also have a better set of developer tools at your disposal for iOS than Android at present. Although, that gap has narrowed a bit.

It's easier sometimes to release on iOS, trouble-shoot the concept on iOS and then look at Android when you've got the majority of the interface and user interaction bugs sorted out.

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for UPC to not have an Android app though. They should be trying to make the device work with as many smartphones as possible. So, that should really mean iOS and Android and you've covered most people.

Depends on what toolsets the developer is using, I know of one commercially used Mobile dev platform that makes it as easy for Android and caters for the idiosyncracies of each handset without having to rewrite base code every time.

Yeah I wasn't trying to start a fanboi war, I actually quite like iOS I just have alot of Android devices about hence my original query.

Make love not war lads, we have better things to worry about on the Horizon.

Aherm... yep sorry I'll go grab my own coat there.

Speaking as someone who has just set his girlfriend up with an iPhone 3G where half of the apps won't install because they need the newer features of the 3Gs, iPhone4 or even iPhone5 this is just simply not true.

Try installing iOS 4.2.1 on an iPhone 3G and see how much it slows the device down making it practically unusable.

Now... I'm really done with this conversation. Some people like Android, some people prefer iOS. Some people just get on with things and try and get as much use out of devices that they already own and aren't concerned with which OS is more user friendly, has more features or is more cool.

Some of us just try to live our daily tech lives and get on with things... wondering why there's no Android app yet for a service that has just been launched and is actually quite handy to use when you have a Windows PC available.

Don't get me started on why the Cinevia plugin isn't available on Linux. ;-)

The e-mail offering the trial either says that you will hear from them soon or it gives you a number to call, at no stage will you be sent to a website.

A UPC rep said they were testing all aspects in the trail including web sign-up so it's possible that some people will be directed to a website to sign up for the trial.

Just curious - how noisy are the boxes? Do they have a fan??

I switched back to watching upc analog because the fan in the (non-horizon) digital box was too noisy.

The last email I got from UPC on 2nd May said

available for you buy. You’ll be invited to place your order
on our website in the next few days.

What part of me stating that the email I received stated I had been selected for the trial, and that I would be directed to the website to sign-up for such in due course, wasn't clear?

Anyway, thanks for the helpful response.

Looking forward to getting this up and running - have nothing but good things to say about UPC as a long time customer.
