Anybody running the horizon box through an amp? What type sound is it outputting?

As with the last HD box, anything that outputs Dolby 5.1 you'll get that, otherwise standard stereo output. It'll be up to the broadcast more than the box!
The on demand stuff has a nice DD5.1 stream!

Will existing customers get this free or will they have to pay extra?

Suppose to be €2.50 extra a month for the trial, haven't a clue about official release.

Can someone confirm that this box replaces the router? Just "upgraded" to 50mb broadband from a legacy package with 25mb and getting between 12-20mb only on the new Cisco router. Would this Horizon box give me a better wireless signal? I was told that the Thompson's provided were reconditioned boxes and very rare.

That is interesting, I will wait out to see how this goes before getting broadband.

The new box is your modem / router / wireless all in one.
In my case, I have the thompson router and it was all set up and i use an Airport extreme for my wifi so decided to keep it that setup, but in most cases you'll just have the horizon box.
I've been told the wireless is better with better distance and speed.

Are you able to use both (your existing router and the horizon box) for wifi?
My tv and my desktop PC are in different rooms, so I wouldn't be able to connect my PC to my horizon box.

You could always use homeplugs from your Horizon Box to your PC. Look them up, you can use any plug in your home as part of your network.

Does the Horizon box have four or more Ethernet ports? I need ports for my amp, TV and Blu-Ray player, none of them support Wi-Fi connectivity.

I'm confused, what do you mean? I have my horizon box plugged into my network so it can see content on my home network / get access online.
I believe you can use the Horizon box wireless and pass through to your home network via ethernet alright, but your internet enabled coax is either going into your current modem or the Horizon box, and not both.

I used these and they are great. I have 'em in the spare room where my PC and NAS drives are to share out my media to the rest of the place. Where I can i try to hard wire my connections as Wifi doesn't have the bandwidth really.
I spend a bit of cash on the 500megabit versions as I need the extra capacity for streaming full HD content from my servers.

well after being accepted on to the trial, and making the call this morning it turns out I'm in an area that does not have Horizon yet. Seems like I could have been told this about 3 weeks ago!

Had no email this morning. I knew this was a set up to make me feel bad.

Got an email on 12th April saying 'You have been successful in registering for our Horizon TV trial and we will be in touch in the coming weeks with full details.'.

Have heard nothing since then, this is looking less and less like a trail and more like a soft rollout to me.

Ho much did the new Horizon Bundle cost you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,060 ✭✭✭crazyderk

So It is a soft roll out.

I asked how long does this trial last for and there's no end date its just basically allowing people to get the service slowly at the start and work out whatever bugs there are!

Waiting 22 min, got through, only to be told that they will take my number and have someone call me back later, that their phone system is being hammered, so they are doing it on a callback basis now.

Got that too. I reckon I don't pay enough right now to be suitable for the trial.
