we should introduce conscription for a while get a few skangers off the streets

Good idea, first we should teach them how to fire weapons properly, then maybe some hand to hand fighting, something like that IDF (krav magaw?) stuff. Then when their conscription is up back onto the streets with them where they can use all their new found skills to fight evil, or something

We do need the defence forces. Maybe it would be wise to change their role slightly, and make them so some work. I know from experience how little they actually do - its the dole in uniform. Assigning them tasks would be wise? Maybe they could paint schools, clean parks or help elderly.

I guess we can keep the army as long as the troika allow us to.

Of course we need them. Who's going to be collecting money from the banks if the army is gone.

The army helps the banks to move cash don't they?

I remember once during a bus strike in Ireland the army stepped in to help.

Ha, obviously you have little experience in what they actually do, unless you want to fill us in? Or is your experience 2 weeks in the DF before quitting?

Without the army there the IRA will collect a lot of it.

Sounds like you no jack **** about what the army does .

There's about 10 ex Irish Defence Force organisations on Facebook with thousand's of members ,who all will have one thing in common and that is a pride in serving their country at home during the emergency of the troubles and abroad with the United Nations and as every soldier knows ,that cannot and never will be taken away by anybody .

I think there was recent mention in the media that Irish troops were in line to go there .

There's already an Irish contingent serving there training the Malian armed forces to help them secure their own country as we speak.

I haven't heard anything official, but I do know that the Irish have a well-established record of serving in a peace-keeping role in war-torn countries in Africa (Congo, Eritrea, Chad and Liberia) so I would imagine there are people planning and costing a deployment there as we speak. I'd imagine cost, and whether or not some of our other European partners will commit are the major considerations as to whether a peace-keeping force will be deployed there.

Minister Shatter has voiced that he would consider sending Irish troops to Mali, should the U.N request them.

Irish soldiers are ALREADY serving in Mali.

    Under British command.

They went there in March and are doing excellent work training members of Malis national army in international military best practices.

Its a small team thats gone over initially as part of a 200 strong british team. We train on courses in the UK with them, they train here with us so it makes sense.

Shatter is talking about sending an Irish Battalion overseas to Mali as part of a UN mission.
