Vintage car registered in 1980

Was looking at a few series 3 Landrover and was just told that those registered after the 1.1.1980 MUST have an NCT even though a 1980 Landrover would be 33 years old ? Can anyone confirm for sure ? Thought that all 30 years old + car didn't need an NCT. Many thanks in advance

not been 30 years+ for a few years now. 1.1.80 is the cut off
