It would be a shame to see it go. I find it a bit of a pain to download and burn a DVD to watch on TV, so popping into Xtra Vision was always handy for a DVD. The problem is the late fees were off putting (for me) and the lack of 'value' (though improving) in renting DVDs in terms of deals.

My local Xtra Vision is always full in the evenings, I went to use their printer once and was completely shocked. People were mostly renting and buying sweets.

It was something like €4 to rent a film for one night
Clowns have it up to a €5 now.
Don't worry about that, GameStop are fcuked too come November with the new Consoles.
They're all coming with Blu Rays due to bad broadband.

New xbox & play station rumored to have download only capability for new games thus doing away with buying second hand games from gamestop.
I think that's what minidazzler means but im open to correction

Feel so sad for all the people that may lose there jobs but we stopped using them long time ago. Myself and OH were both made redundant and got Netflix on the wii was far cheaper than renting. I hope they find a buyer tho .

Did they really want the sweets back after people "rented" them?

Still an enormous blow. Gamestop simply cannot survive without every penny it's currently getting from pre-owned turnover. The new only market has basically no margin for them. I know that for a fact, because I used to work for Game.

And when that went belly up, a lot of the people I used to work with got jobs with Xtravision in the end.

I know the writing was on the wall for this one, but my heart goes out to all involved. It's a miserable experience.

I have always found my local xtra vision to be very badly ran.
They're pricing was all over the place and the staff were frequently ignorant .
I had the manager in my local store state to me that " this store is the most sucessful retail outlet in town".......i wonder what she would say today?
Over priced and with ignorant staff, i will not miss xtravision.

    They were crap anyway.

Anytime I brought a DVD cover to the counter they would spend five minutes looking in the back, then come back and say "we don't have that DVD, do you want to get something else?". This didn't just happen a couple of times. It happened more often than not.

Another time I wanted to get an old film on DVD for my mother. I asked in Xtra Vision if they had it and the cashier immediately said "no" without even checking on the computer. I said "well, could you order it or something?". He just stared at me blankly. Then as I was leaving he said something like "come back to Xtra Vision anytime, we're always happy to help".

Things like downloads didn't stop me from going to Xtra Vision. The fact that they were rubbish did.

They shortsightedly didn't embrace new technologies so I'm not sorry for them. They could have brought in some kind of streaming service but no it was probably too profitable to keep screwing people with exorbitant rental fees, ridiculous game prices and punishing late fees (speaking of which will the phrase "I've no money on me now can I pay it another time" disappear? :D).

You burn the download to a DVD in order to watch it? Seriously? Ah the innocence! I thought to be a forum mod you had to be a little bit tech savvy?

Not everyone wants to watch a movie by their PC, or are bothered getting a HDD Mediaplayer.

  • Posts: 8,317 ✭✭✭ Macie Screeching Gourd

I've never owned a HDD Mediaplayer and God knows when I last watched a film on my laptop. I'd tell you my setup but I think my account might get fisted with infractions if I did. You might even know that and be naughtily trying to lure me into a trap you sausage you!!! :D

I used to work in XV. I can't remember much as I was in college and baked most of the time. I do remember "merchandising" was the exciting name given to stocking the shelves. Also I don't know what it was about the first X-Files film but if I had a penny for every person who came in asking whether they'd like it or not then I'd be on Dragons Den. How I was supposed to know objectively whether a complete stranger that I had no idea of their favourite genres or mood that night would enjoy a perfunctory cash-in spin-off is anybody's guess. Bloody hell I find it hard enough recommending something to my close family with the amount of garbage put out these days.

You could feel sorry for them but no one has lost their job, yet.

Also, I don't think 'Good riddance' is a good way to start a post about a company in dire straits that employs over 1000 people in this country, especially with the overwhelming lack of employment that currently exists.

If they were smart they would have started an online streaming site for movies with a monthly subscription or some similar thing. This would have created jobs in IT and web design while also subsidising some of the less profitable stores around the country with revenue from the growing online market.

Maybe Good riddance was harsh, but I think they've only themselves to blame for their failure.

I just find the worst thing about them to be how you go in and realise they've changed where everything is. The New releases are now where the used games where, the boxsets are stuck at the end of the 4 for €20 section, the used games are sellotaped to the ceiling....

I may have exaggerated towards the end there, but the point still stands!

I realised last week, there's nowhere in Limerick City to buy a decent new DVD. I still prefer a hard copy to downloaded or streamed stuff, and it was a weird realisation. Kind of sucks. A friend who works in Xtravision will probably be losing his job. I do buy a lot from Amazon, because most of the crap I watch can't be bought in a store over here since most of the World Film sections disappeared and barely anyone watches schlock.

I hope Xtravision doesn't go altogether, and another store pops up. It's nice just browsing and finding a gem you never knew you wanted to see until then.

I know what you mean. I didn't have an Xtravision near me anyway, but there's nothing like rummaging for something random, I dearly miss HMV for that. I just don't enjoy online shopping as an experience in the same way.

I have to say, of all the DVD or CD stores in Dublin city, I genuinely never would have expected Tower to be pretty much the last man standing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭Nabber

Haven't rented a DVD in a while. So many crap films out.

Good luck to any staff that get laid off. But ib fairness, this happens to businesses when there is a technological advance. Something had to become obsolete.

Tower is pricey but they aren't really a main-street place, their market is more specialised and people who want the more obscure stuff that Tower can provide are usually willing to pay a little bit more for it and likely to collect stuff so they're more likely to buy cds and dvds rather than just download everything. Their staff really know their stuff too.

I never would have guessed at them lasting so long either, but it kinda makes sense now looking at how all of the mainstream chains have gone.

Too many outlets selling knock-down DVDs now. My local shop has them on a stand right beside the counter. I have hardly any reason to go to my local Xtra-vision save for when I want to buy a console game, which doesn't happen.

It's hard to see how they can keep a sustainable business model with so many people downloading and streaming. Shame to think there are jobs in jeopardy but after the fall of so many retail giants surely they had to see the writing was on the wall?
