It's an odd one. But why would the US government not like his story? Surely soldiers go missing presumed dead all the time - I thought they would love the idea of one having been found.

I don't think this lad was still fighting the war though. Sounds more a case of 'going native' and as such was an embarrassment to the US authorities.

Wasn't there a story of some guy in Germany that was found hiding in a house a few years ago, who had been there since the World War 2? Seemingly he didn't even know the war had ended.

The government don't like cases like this because if he was genuinely left behind, they owe him 44 years of back pay if he is listed M.I.A.

They left hundreds, possibly thousands of their service men behind due to financial reasons. It's embarrassing for the US government when one of them suddenly appears from the jungle after all these years.

The last time something like this happened was in the early 80s with a marine private - they completely destroyed his reputation.
