Van Rental for bike transport in France

Hi All,

Five of us and our bikes are flying over to the Alps next month (Chambery-Savoie region) and we're looking at sorting transport whilst there.

Ideally we need means to transport 5 people and 5 bikes around the place. The vehicle(s) also need to be big enough to transport the bikes not only packed in bike boxes but also assembled as we might have a small bit of travelling to do over there to get to our spins.

We've been looking online and it looks like our best option is to rent a 3-seater transit van of some sort along with a separate car for the additional passengers but I was wondering if anyone here could offer some advice from their own experiences. We would be especially grateful if someone knew of a single vehicle that might be appropriate for our needs.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You have the best idea- a transit or even something smaller like a berlingo would be grand and easy on juice, and a second economy sized car would be perfect

We got a lwb Open Movana minbus (9 seater) in Italy a couple of weeks ago and it fit 6 bike boxes (4 in the back and 2 on the back seat) and 6 bikes (in the back, saddle to handlebar with front wheels removed and back seat tipped forward.). Plenty of room for the 6 passengers too.

It was fine and easy enough to drive. I booked through Avis - it was a special order but they were able to confirm what I had before I collected.

See if they have crew vans. Colonal and myself hired a transit connect for the day, twas cheap as chips and easy on the diesel (obviously won't hold 5).

@Captain Havoc - A crew van would be ideal. Can you provide me with any more information on where you rented from?

We're looking at a Movana actually with Avis but on the website it indicates that it is only 3 seater. Did you ring Avis to arrange this special order or how did you manage?

No I just booked a '9 seater' but I rang them to check what it was that I was going to get to make sure it was suitable, I'd give them a ring, always found them really helpful (the english phone number moreso as it's available out of work hours).
