Brilliant from Celtic, those prices are great, might get one for next season. £300 in some areas of the stadium.

Yes it's a smart move. Attendances were falling in the league home games due mainly to the recession but also to the fact that the league this season was by enlarge a procession from start to finish. Both of those factors will probably continue to be the case for the next few seasons, so it's important to keep the stadium as filled as possible and keep a lively atmosphere at Parkhead for home games.

The thinking is clearly that fans cannot afford to pay for both European & Domestic matchdays. Season ticket holders staying away in droves after a midweek match is not good for matchday revenues/covering costs. Its good financial sense and good pr to address the burden on fans. But whilst they 'save' fans money on tickets, they'll look to get that money back in merchandise, hospitality, catering etc. This adds to the pressure on Lennon to achieve European football next season though to sustain this approach.

Anyone know when the vote is for player of the year?

Earlier in the year i would of said Forster was the obvious choice, Commons has been getting better and better. 18 goals i think he has and our highest number of assists. Big Kelvin Wilson is another than has vastly improved since last season. Joe Ledley for me is Mr consistent, like to see players that work hard for the team. Wanyama would obviously be in there with a shout, along with Samaras for his performances in Europe.

Hard to single out one player

For me, its Commons, consistent over the whole season and he's goals/assists contribution is arguably better than Hoopers. Not many would have thought he'd be in the running for it after last season, myself included. But when I heard he reported for preseason fitter than he was at any stage of the season before (said it in this thread at the time), I was very confident of him bouncing back but I didnt think he'd contribute what he has. Fair play to him for the turn around.

Honourable mention to Joe Ledley, doesnt have to be explained imo

Samaras, Hooper, Brown, Forster, Wanyama, even Lustig all put in some epic performances but over the season but the 2 above have consistently delivered right through for me.

The attendance figures this season are actually remarkable. 46,356 average in a season where the league was won before a ball was kicked, prices were high and money was low. Add in the fact that it's like 99% home fans too.

Our lowest attendance is better than most Premiership's max attendances.

Great prices there for the season books, especially for the young ones. Hopefully it'll mean a full house throughout the season. If I was able to get over more often, I'd be very tempted.

POTY for me would be between Commons and Samaras, with Ledley and Wanyama in the running also. Ledley has been brilliant and his performances have been very noticeable in the absence of Scott Brown, he's an intelligent player who picks out good passes and is very consistent. Wanyama is the strongest player we have in that role between defence and midfield, I think his performances have dropped a little since the CL and he needs to work on his discipline also, bit wreckless in the tackles sometimes. Loved his header v Barca, such a good player to have in the box for free kicks/corners. Commons has been really good, especially 2nd half of the season, and is a player I'd be gutted to lose. Quick on his feet, always a threat with the ball, sometimes a little greedy but you can forgive that with his goal scoring record. Samaras is up there for me for his European performances in particular, tbh he's one of a few individuals that gives us that little bit extra in many of those games - we rely on him hugely in Europe. Has his faults as we all know, but unlike earlier years, I think his faults have been far outweighed this season (and last) by his strengths.

Tbh, any of the above would be a good choice, but seeing as I'm a biased old fooker, I'll go for my old favourite Sammy to just clinch it.

What a signing Commons has been for £300,000.

Kelvin Wilson deserves a mention just because of the contrast between this season and the last. He's even moved up to a 71 rating on Fifa

Great shout by Celtic on the season card prices. I moved from 104 to 140 this season for a saving of £100, it's lovely to know the club are listening to the fans.

    Commons POTY for me

How many season ticket holders does club have?

No Celtic players on the POTY shortlist? Why, because they didnt have to get out of 3rd gear to win the league?

Billie McKay not getting a nomination is poor form aswell whereas Niall McGinn gets nominated on the strength of half a season

Higdon to win the main award & Wanyama should win the YPOY

    EDIT

Shame to see Paul Slane's career go down the toilet, clubs really do need to do more to help players through serious injuries/setbacks.

Can't be that many. If it's true about them counting STs in attendances whether they show up or not then we'd have had nothing less than 46k.

Given how many of our fans come over from Ireland and therefore are unlikely to buy STs it's probably around 30k.

we did have 50k during the MON era

"I love it here at Celtic, so I'll be here next season."

I've not really spoken to my agent as I have been playing my football and I have not had any thoughts about leaving," said Wanyama.

"I feel like I'm at the right club. I love it here at Celtic, so I'll be here next season.

"I still have a contract at Celtic and I'm happy at the club, so I think I will still be here."

Good man Vic, keep that transfer fee high!

Lawell on SSN earlier pretty much saying Hooper is gone if the right bid comes in

Straight swap for Hooper and McCourt...

**** it, I'd throw in Bangura aswell! :pac:

That applies to every player on Celtic's books

That applies to every player of every team! I heard Lawwell talking about it, nothing to suggest Hooper would be a certainty to go above anyone else.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭BhoscaCapall

Always thought it a bit odd how all the talk was about Hooper when Wanyama is our best player and there are plenty top sides needing a good defensive mid (Chelsea and United spring to mind).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,529 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

Wanyama isnt our best player, he's our most valuable commodity because of his age, his contract and how settled he is in Glasgow.

Best player overall is a very debatable subject based on this season as there isnt one player we would suffer badly without and thats down to the depth of the squad built.

Now I'm sure this has been discussed already, but how in the name of **** can the runaway champions of a division not have one player nominated for player of the year?

It is an odd one alright, I guess their thinking is that none of the Celtic squad has played above their potential in the SPL this season which there might be an element of truth to but to overlook guys like Commons, Wanyama, Wilson is a joke.

We are the sum of our parts, we are nothing without the team...:pac:

No Celtic players & no Billie McKay is strange and Niall McGinn has only played well for half a season & Shinnie hasnt set the heather on fire for me. I suppose Celtic players not getting nominated is a penalty for some lacklustre performances this season.

I think manager of the year should be Derek Adams though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭Lennonist

It's strange but not really important that Celtic have no players on the shortlist. Neil Lennon is complaining about it, but he shouldn't give it a second thought. His team has won the league, are in the Cup Final, and had a great CL campaign. He should concentrate his team on winning the Cup and more importantly preparing for the club for CL qualifiers in July.

Seems to be a bit up in the air regarding a couple of key players like Hooper and Wanyama. Celtic need to find out fairly quick if they are going to stay or not, and if they are not staying replace them as soon as possible and try to have any new signings available for the CL qualifiers. There's no point in keeping players if they are going to run down their contracts and not sign new ones, better to sell them and use the money to replace them.

I think Celtic should settle down about the shortlist. We knew from Day 1 our efforts this year would be undermined, the season was always going to be about the other clubs and in fairness they've put on a pretty good show with a lot of stand-out performances. Had the likes of Wanyama, Forster and Commons been playing for another team they'd be a shoe-in to win the award but as it stands their performances are obviously diminished by expectation.

I don't think European success is a factor in these awards is it? Always figured they were domestic. It's a shame for the players because all their hard work and success came before Christmas and so isn't as fresh in the mind for others. The likes of Forster and Hooper have been fairly poor this calendar year but were sensational in the first half of the season. Lennon is just doing his job by sticking by his players and should be commended for it. It's always been us against them and it's about time we had a manager who stood up for the club.

It's almost patronising to the lads nominated really, but fair play. Higdon should get it IMO, finishing on 25+ goals for a team outside of the Big 1 is always going to be impressive.
