Ok boys, lets focus on the "real" problems :) forget about licence, since it is confusing and contradictory, we'll play by "jungle's rules", so because it is put there open in the wild and we can change and use it we'll do it :) You can blame me but I do not care, just do not put that tasty piece of meat under my nose next time, so I wont eat it :)

Just as a reminder, here is the AR-P download link https://code.google.com/p/tdt-amiko/downloads/list

P.S. I do not advocate against hdmu or other images, perfectly I'd like we combine our efforts, so maximum I can ask is to try AR-P image and give us your feedback.

T0mmy >> What model/make dongle are you using? How is it working out.. Is the range decent or does the router need to be fairly close to the Alien2 (like 20-30ft)? Did you plug it into front of Alien2? Have you tried streaming HD? Is the picture solid or does it break up even in SD? Have you tried taking a laptop into another room or upstairs and see how it works then?

    Cheers!

    Flex

Just finished watching a HD episode of Game of Thrones on Ice plugin and it was ok but juddered four or five times, mostly towards the end. Then I watched some Youtube clips and some of them were a bit jerky too. Also it crashed several times but I don't know if that was the fault of the dongle. I have a theory that those dongles get glitchier the hotter they get. All in all internet streaming is pretty **** with this dongle. I'm considering throwing it in a drawer and running a wire across my living room. Another thing that annoys me about it is it flashes all the time, even when I'm not using it - even when the box is on standby! I would only recommend this dongle if you're only intending to use it to update software and run autobouquets and the like.

T0MMY I appreciate the feedback.. the more I learn about the Alien2 the more appealing is the idea of using it to stream channels/movies to another part of the house.

I did some SpeedTest'ing myself tonight by moving my router from its usual place in the hallway to on top of the TV and then underneath the TV right beside where the Amiko would go and it turns out I get about the same download performance regardless, and the signal strength stays pretty good even when I'm upstairs (I live in a fairly small house!)

Bottom line: I'm gonna forget the USB dongle. I'll put the router next to the Alien2 under the TV and connect them with network cable and then use the routers Wifi to stream around the house.

I might get Homeplugs eventually.. there's a good set on eBay where one of the plugs is an 802.11-N class Wifi router itself. Plug that in upstairs and have solid Wifi there too.

Is it just the amikos that get hot? Or do the spurious ones, like this for eg, get hot aswell?

What about a vonet, will it get hot? Will the Vonet work with a midband hotspot/dongle?

    Thanks guys!

Before you buy that router maybe you should get a second opinion. Maybe a wired connection will be just as bad. Maybe it wasn't the dongle causing the problems but the servers.

Hot is probably normal for all USB dongles. I know nothing!

My best advise is to run a cable or use some method other than wireless (homeplugs). With wireless you have one frequency which you must transmit and receive on and you cannot do both at the same time like a cable (wireless is half duplex). Although you may not think it, data transfer and streaming is two way traffic, information is sent in batches and must be acknowledged before more is sent. Steaming from one wireless device to another through your wireless router will be even slower, as the information needs to be transmitted twice over the same frequency with acknowledgements and any missed packets resent. For this reason I would advise cabling everything static in your house and leaving wireless for mobility only, your home network will work better this way. Run cables, future-proof your house, you're going to need them.

At least, this is my experience
Can you upload a backup of your image if possible ?

It seems strange that there are no backup images uploaded on this thread ,would be very handy for beginners as it takes a bit of tweaking to get these boxes setup correctly.
I might upload my HDMU one when I get a chance .

I've been asked for them before and have refused them because when you flash from scratch you learn all about the layout of the directories and understand how the box works. Get a pre-configured image and the thread fills with very basic questions about stuff that should be learned.

The Vonets WIFI Bridge is excellent, I've been using two of them for a number of years in my house on a couple of different receivers, great streaming speeds, cheap and reliable. I really can't praise them enough, especially if you simply can't run a cable to the box.

And no, they don't get hot.

    PM with Link sent.

Mind you, Pog is correct in saying that this should really only be considered by those who, having gone through an image setup, can then just quickly try another image before maybe restoring the one they built up bit by bit.

I knew feck all about Linux until I got this and my Raspberry Pi :)

I'll try push them to the feed, however removing OpenWebIf will be a manual step in a telnet console

Or any chance of a link to download an IPK or ZIP please ? Once installed, should the version of AutoBoquets install without any issue ?

Ok so what you're proposing to do, I'm not asking for your feelings, asking for an action plan.

And to be honest I have seen plenty of opensource projects that disallow commercial use, while noncommercial is just fine, non of them asking to not change the available code, normally, they will make some functionality not available.

Honestly my mind refuses to understand this model: "those 3 line of code I make available to you, but you can not change them because I want so". What kind of openness is this?

I use these homeplugs... http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-PA411KIT-AV500-Powerline-Adapter/dp/B0084Y9N3O and a few sets of the 200Mbps version too.
I have most of my networked items connected with these (RPi,several pc's,Xbox's etc) and am very happy with their performance. Streaming BR rips across the network from my NAS is flawless.

I'm following Pogs guide to set this up myself but I don't have the option to downgrade to this file (Spark 1.2.51 E2 Boot Upgrade) on the GM box does anyone have a link where I can download it?

    Thanks

What firmware is the lowest version you have available to you, it's probably a newer box and already installed

    You don't even need to use Spark at all to load an E2 image, you can do it just by USB;
1.Make sure [engima2] folder is on your USB.
    2.copy [uImage] and [e2jffs2.img] to [engima2] folder
3.Connect USB stick to the receiver
4.Keep holding [OK] Button in Front Panel, then power on STB.
5.After 5 seconds, you will see [Forc] in LED, release [OK] button and press
    Button.
then press down button > you will see [enig]
    now press
Button, you will see [fact] for a moment.and press the ok button
6.if everything is OK, you will see [U LD] shining in LED
7.if upgrade is successful, you will see [SUCC] and STB will reboot automatically
If the upgrade does not finish in 5-10 minutes, then there must be something wrong, please check your configuration and re-try.

It really is very easy and quick for installing E2

Lots of us failed with that method, it's fussy about what brand usb key you use whereas we figured out the Spark method works with all usb keys. Also, if you have your own fairly big image backed up, you must use the Spark method as it will be too big to be installed by this method

I tried a few which didn't work before I found an old 2GB SanDisk Cruizerwhich did. It is really fast way to flash an image.

I would not be the best person to ask as I do not use recording, I simply do not need it :) Everything is on Astra 2 I do not care if I miss :), then I use the box for russian IPTv, where I have 7 days history kept by the provider :).

I tried some time ago a relatively fast kingston and it worked fine, an external portable hdd should work fine too, may be cache size on it might make a difference.

1.2.51 was there but after I installed the e2plugin I had no option to upgrade.
I upgraded the firmware to the latest and downgraded it to 1.2.51 again and got the plugin installed and e2 worked as well.

I couldn't find this in the menu for booting to e2:
    menu-->system-->factory default-->Boot to E2

Oh I know, I was just giving him another option to install the image if he was experiencing issues through Spark. I personally have used this method countless times with a 10 year old PNY 128MB USB with no problems although I'm aware it can be very temperamental with different USB keys.

Just turn off the box, press and hold the OK button the front panel and power it on. Keep it pressed until you see FORC and then SPARC on the display. Release it, press the Down arrow and it will display ENIG. Now just give the OK button a single press. The box will now boot to Enigma.
