The research which analyzed 150,048 individuals from 142 countries to examine relationships between optimism, subjective well-being, perceived health, and hopes for the future, finds that the Irish and Brazilians are the most hopeful for the future, while people in Egypt and Lebanon are the least.

    Sher 'twill all be grand!

I'd believe it. We speak in negatives but tend to be quite positive in general.

I have serious misgivings about this.

What they dont say is the research was done in a pub, while the Irish person was in between a hot Lebanese and a hot Egyptian.

That phrase has begun to boil my blood, because the word ‘grand’ has been the ruination of this nation, it truly characterizes our blithe acceptance of the substandard in every institution and every aspect of Irish life!
We badly need people standing up and demanding more, rather then squabbling over the crumbs off the table and then trying to press them all together into the semblance of a slice of the cake.
The title of this thread should read, the ‘Ireland the most delusional place in the world’.

Probably true but I think they may be confusing optimism with people having their head in the clouds

I think the Irish are outwardly optimistic but I have my doubts as to whether they are really optimistic at all.

Well if you are eternally optimistic nothing will ever get you down.

Hilarious phrase. If your blood was boiling that much you'd be a black pudding.

We have enough food to feed 36 million people.
We have enough fresh water to bring any country in the world out of drought.
We have an unlimited supply of Zanax and Viagra.
Our only neighbour thinks we're just it's small and harmless little brother.
We have more children per capita than practically every other member of the OECD.
We have the lowest level of infant mortality in the world.
    We are under populated.
We have beautiful air and scenery.

I'm going for pints later in the sun.
    Why the **** shouldn't I be optimistic???

Irish people just hide their true emotions and pretend that everything is 'grand'.

This would explain why we have a high suicide rate.

Sure fúck it, t'will be grand and it could be worse.

We are not Gaza, we are not in the grasp of a horrific famine, we have a fairly alright (not great, but not the worst) health and education systems. We could be a hell of a lot worse.

We rate 37th (11.4 per 100,000 in 2011 apparently) on the world for suicide rates. Still too high, but nothing compared to Greenland (108.1 per 100,000) so it could be worse.

I don't know about you, but I've got a well paying job, a healthy lifestyle, renting a nice apartment with the missus and money enough after the bills to do what I like. I've nothing to be delusional about because I'm not as angry as some.

What should I be 'Demanding more' of?
