Having fun setting up my Amiko Alien 2 box. Thanks to PogMoThoin for posting all the info.
Some questions as I am working my way through this:

-Wifi dongle - Enigma 2 not picking up my wifi dongle connected to the USB port at the back - Spark had picked it up just fine. Troubleshooting tips welcome. It's one of these: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Ferguson-W03-USB-WiFi-Dongle-Stick-Ariva-150-250-52E-102E-202E-/251219327778#ht_1129wt_1163

-Autobouquets: what are the correct settings when running Autobouquets first time? Any way you can get the Saorview channels off the DVB-T tuner into the bouquets? My box tries to tune to the satellite feeds instead.

I got mine from EireTV. They are about the same price as everywhere else but they actually have a premises where you could go if you had a problem. I have heard that one of the bigger online sellers in Ireland won't answer emails when it doesn't suit.

This is a question for people using their Alien2 to stream channels to their laptop using HDMU Enigma.

How are people connecting things up to achieve streaming? Running a network cable from the Alien2 to the router? Using a Wifi dongle? Using HomePlugs to send the signal around the house using the mains? I would ideally like to stream over Wifi but have read that those Wifi dongles give mixed results. The Wifi card in my laptop supports the 802-N Wifi protocol but my Netopia Router is 802.11b+g only. My router is about 20ft from the box but there's a glass/wooden door separating them.

If Wifi dongles do the job then can anyone recommend a good model? There are three on eBay from an Irish seller, one has an antenna. Is that better?
    dongle with Antenna : http://www.ebay.ie/itm/USB-WiFi-Dongle-Skybox-Openbox-Eyebox-F3-F4-F5-M3-X3-X4-X5-RT5370-150Mbps-/251255776004?pt=UK_Computing_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item3a8002e304#ht_1352wt_1165
    Black dongle : http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Amiko-Nano-USB-WiFi-Stick-for-8900-Alien-8820-8330-8340-Alien-3-Alma-RT5370-/261036285162?pt=UK_Computing_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item3cc6f99cea#ht_1076wt_1165
    White dongle : http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Amiko-Mini-USB-WiFi-Stick-for-8900-Alien-8820-8330-8340-Alien-2-Alma-RT5370-/261079530735?pt=UK_Computing_USB_Wi_Fi_Adapters_Dongles&hash=item3cc98d7cef#ht_1040wt_1165

    Any help gratefully appreciated!

AFAIK the Amiko ones don't work with any of the Enigma2 images at the moment. I have a mini Amiko dongle that doesn't work with HDMU.

Is this for streaming of channels like 4od, RTE player etc or can you stream the regular channels as well? Can this be done over a dongle?

Apologies, I'm a total novice to this.

There are two types of streaming that you are confusing here:
The RTE Player and 3 player work via plugins to receive streamed tv. (4od and BBC player are geo blocked so unless you can get around that, they won't work for Ireland)
The web interface allows the box stream a channel over the network as live tv (in fact as a test I streamed 2 channels while watching a third on my television- they were all SD)

As far as I am aware none of the Amiko dongles are compatable with any Engma2 images. They will work perfectly with Spark - though they get very hot and one of mine died after a couple of weeks. I think I killed it when I was loading a new version of Enigma, so when you're loading a new image I would unplug it just in case.

Basically you'd be better off buying a USB dongle that is compatible with both E2 and Spark, but a wired connection is better again.

Thanks! Thats exactly where i was confused! I have a projector hooked up to my laptop, so i could play it off that, alternatively there seems to be a VGA connection on the back of the Alien so i can hook it up direct, plus i want to be able to watch telly on my tablet, i use Filmon already, but it doesnt have the Irish channels on it.

Cheers! I'll have a root around for something like that. I ordered the box and a wireless keyboard today, fooking dying to get it and mess around with it. :D

Actually theres a setting in the HDMU centre where you have to change the chipset of the wifi in order to get the dongles to work, once you choose 5370 it works fine with HDMU ;)

Or you use AR-P and it is done for you automatically ;)

Anybody using the Amiko Alien with a scart connection to TV. Setup one with HDMU image a few weeks back for a friend. Have had to reflash once already. Today I have now got a call saying the picture, including menu is rolling on the screen. Any ideas besides telling my friend to get a hd tv?

I am using it with a Scart connection .
Sometimes on boot up the picture starts rolling vertically and the only solution is to reboot it.It doesnt happen that often ,not sure of the reason.
I dont use the box as my main receiver so I dont encounter the issue very often.
I guess you could try a different image to see if that is any better.

I've also noted that when using a scart connection the picture in picture on the epg is distorted, the bottom third is just a blur.

Btw does the HDMU software update actually update the image to the newest revision or only update the plugins ?

I have fixed webinterface and autotimer plugin on AR-P over weekend, should be available in the feed shortly.

As well thanks to you I have convinced the team to change webinterface as a default in the next release.

Thank you - looking forward to that! Will you let us know when it's available, or will we be able to tell by the version on the download list? Thanks again.

Why don't you wi-fi people just go and get some powerplugs (or whatever they are called) to run ethernet over your ring mains.

Just got my dongle working. Forget the wizard, it always crashes, just key the info in. Password is case sensitive. UPC is WEP, don't know about the others. I think you will need to set wireless as default too.

hi,can someone confirm the following for me please, is there a pvr built into the box or do I have to buy one separate, and also do these record like a sky+ box, (record one channel while watching another) and finally, how far into the week can you view listings? thanks

Yes it has PVR capabilities, you need to have an external hard drive to use those features. Yes you can record one channel and watch another, you can even record more than one channel at the same time too.

You can get a 7 day guide through the CrossEPG plugin.

Have you tried taking a laptop into another room or upstairs and see how it works then?

    Question questions…

I have the Amiko mini USB dongle. The guy in EireTV said he speed tested both of the Amiko dongles and they were exactly the same speed. I use it in the front and kind of sellotape the door shut, though it does not completely close. The only advantage I could see with getting one of the bigger ones in that they get quite hot so a longer usb pen may not get affected by the heat so much, but maybe it makes no difference. The first one I bought died in a week so maybe they are poor quality. My TV is set up quite close to my router (UPC) so I can't tell you how well it would work in another room. I used it in Spark for a while and it seemed to work fine. I'll watch some HD stuff tonight when I get home and tell you how it works.
