Crater on road near Rotunda

For anyone cycling up past The Rotunda watch out for the crater that Dublin City Council left behind today. It goes 3/4 of the way across the road and is fairly deep. Lots of drivers cringing going over it. Worst bit of resurfacing I've ever seen. I think they must have a deal going with car garages who are short of business. I've found the roads in Dublin have deteriorated a lot the last year or 2.

There was a massive deep one at the edge of a speed bump on Cappagh road, at the top of my road for a while there. I was walking home 3 months ago in the evening and there was an ambulance parked by it, lights flashing, with someone being worked on in the back. The next day it was filled with a rough blob of tarmac (which has already come to pieces). No prizes for guessing what happened.

No, it has seriously deteriorated (subsised) in the past few days. I hit it yesterday afternoon and thought I did serious damage to the wheels. I was actually going to post about it here.

Funny, I thought things were improving whenthey filled in that horrible crack at the left turn beside the Aul Triangle. Clearly not.

I dont know how they manage it, but repair jobs are often worse
They certainly can be for cyclists as they often make a smooth surface where you can see the hazards a lot rougher and make it impossible to navigate without going over the rough surface

The current state of the Malahide Road is a good example of this. Not sure if they will go back to finish the job properly when everything has settled, but there's a lot of weaving required at present to avoid some very uneven surfaces

The good news is it helps protect some of my KOMs...

Thats really the issue - the repairs don't take bicycles into consideration and the temporary patchwork can make things dangerous

Unless you take the opportunity to sharpen your bike handling skills, of course :)

On a broader note, how hard can it be? Spain does a great jobs with its roads

Just to clarify - the OP described the one at the Rotunda as a "crater". It's actually a trench approx 30cm wide across the road. Presumably it was excavated to install a pipe/cables etc. but it has seriously subsided after being refilled - 10-15 cms deep now and unless you know it's there you'll be on top of it before you notice it.

Spain doesnt have frost action attacking the road surface every winter. Its very destructive and not just to roads.

Spain might not be a good comparison, but other countries with similar climates have better roads ( like Belgium )

Anyway, I found a thread on the subject :

That problem at the Rotunda has been rectified - I passed there tonight. I was thinking it deserved emergency repairs or every taxi driver in Dublin would have had a claim in.

I ran this yesterday and the section before kinsealy pet shop is a pure joke, nearly managed to come off the bike after hitting one of the botched road "repairs" That section didnt work out too well for me, a w@nker in a Barton Coach decided it would be a good idea to pull out in front of me just at the church too, good idea in the wet :(
