Bumper harvest anticipated in the USA this year.

Apart from taking factors into account such as the weather, the fact that much of this bumper crop isn't planted yet, the weather, whether or not farmers will plant more soya rather than grain crops, the weather, how good the yields will be on some of the more marginal land coming back in from set-a-side, the weather, whether or not farmers will be willing to put in the inputs after last years disaster, the weather..... Sounds like someone has a big forward position in grain and needs talk of a bumper harvest to get himself out of trouble. Watch the last episode of "The Boss" on more4 to get a quick primer on media manipulation, fictional and simplistic but I reckon there's a grain of truth in it.

all the estimates are still running very high and there is a serious withdrawal of funds from the market at present. aslong as it puts cheaper grain in my yard it doesnt worry me

Had a fairly difficult calving this morning, 2nd time cow to the stock lm bull. Calf was bloody massive, managed to get him out alive with the jack myself thankfully. 3rd massive calf this year out of maybe 10 from the stock bull, would that be considered high? Easy calving would be a high priority in my book, our vet bills are high enough as is, and Ive very little interest on the beef side of things.

got calf out, was very very tight, alive:eek::eek: massive arse on it, angus heifer off a br/fr heifer... do these calves come beefier on br/fr? hung her over gate, then noticed navel was pumping, so vet stitched it, all well now and back in shed, calf trying to stand already, vet said calf was very near dead as its tongue was blue

Last few calves we've had have been fairly big, cows 60/40 ho/fr dry cows only getting average quality silage.

the corn crop, its predicted to be one of the biggest harvests ever. November futures are well back on todays prices
    ''
Well I'll pass that welcome news onto my farmer neighbours whose (clearly-obsolete!) notion of corn-growing is that the plant needs air, nutrient and water.

The market price of corn, on the other hand, rises as yields decrease (or so my next-door neighbour, who farms 800 acres, tells me). His yield last autumn was one-third what the land produces in an average year; the price he got for his crop was highly satisfactory........as indeed were the profits of the stock market speculators who 'hedge' so profit either way.

Dehorning calves today. I really hate that job:mad:

Didn't help that two of them had been ill so were a bit older than we would have like them to be.

Was looking at new cattle trailers today..

    12X7, twin axle.

    Murphy €4800.
Nugent €5800 Off one fella, €6000 off another.
    Second hand Ifor williams €3850.

Any thoughts on the Murphy? seems mighty cheap, getting 2K for our own 10X5'6". Not sure if we should change the types (cracked walls) and fix up the lights on our current yoke and keep the money in the pocket..

we bought an ifor williams about 10 years ago, went in with my godfather, he has sheep, so got decks also and splitting gate too...do you have anyone who would have an interest in doing this? only downside is collecting the trailer when the decks are down and we have to put them back up... i suppose it works both ways that they have to put them back down!

What would it cost to put tyres and lights, maybe brakes on your own? If the floor etc is sound and you don't be using it every week why change. Only thing about a 7 foot wide trailer is you'll see **** all in the mirrors without extending them.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

dont spend money on an old trailer as they can be a money pit. Keep your eyes on the net as there are a good few second hand trailers for sale that have done very little work. I bought a second hand one last year in June that was bought new in February, probably hadnt moved a half dozen loads. Cant understand how people do such things. have hudson's now as they take serious abuse, heard the new ones are being made under license by indepension so wont be having another if this is the case
