077 stabled in Drogheda as we speak after working the ballast out to Platin last night. Ballast wagons are in Platin.

072 operated Connolly / Dundalk taxi tonight - Will work to Drogheda tomorrow night for Taras on Monday morning.

It seems to be an awful lot of resources to be putting in to locos that are almost 40 years old.

There will never be new locos bought by irish rail...the 201s are he last loco that will ever run on our railway...they are just making sure they have enough locos to go around..

I wouldn't go that far in saying about new locos etc...In 50 years time....They're will always be the need for ballast trains - Per Way trains...and So on....Maybe see EWS Cl.66 being re-gauged and a few sold to IE that way?

Class 66s will never run here re-gauged, their axle load is way too high. They are 120+ tons and have no vaccum brakes for working bogie flats.

But yes a few locos will be needed for ballast, track panel and spoil trains. The rest can be done with MPVs. I can see a new generation of autoballasters built like DMUs with cabs at each end though.

I can't see freight lasting another 10-15 years on IE anyway so no locos will be needed for that. Tara mines is supposed to be fully mined by then anyway unless they discovery more ore deposits.

And what about the IWT liner that has done nothing but grow since it began operation in August 2009? The freight sector of Irish Rail is now the only profitable part plus IE have recently began an ad campaign to attract more freight customers.

If IE wanted more freight they would not be closing freight yards to sell to developers to build apartments, taking up old sidings, freight spurs and closing old lines that could be used for freight. They are only running that ad campaign because they have to be seen to do so by the EU and nothing more.

If the IWT are still going by rail in 10 years time I will be in shock.

084 was in the siding at Edgeworthstown with a ballast train yesterday, still in orange.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

IE don't have the resources to do anything about freight - the mountain must come to Mohammed as it were, and as cheaply as practicable. If the flow requires specialist loading or unloading gear more than a forklift then the port/customer/forwarder better get set to shell out for it as IE have no grants to do so.

To be fair, Dublin Port have spent quite a bit in the last couple of years - their problem is that their mandate doesn't extend to getting the stuff to and from the dockside. If Limerick City Council hadn't balked at the consolidation of Limerick Port downstream to Foynes (which could have netted a tidy sum if sold to develospeculators during the boom) maybe SFPC would have had the cash IE demanded to reinstate that line.

There was a return wagon transfer train today between Limerick and Inchicore; that was the timber wagon movement you saw. There is also track renewal in the Portarlington area this weekend so the muck trains will be plentiful over the coming days down that way.

Dont think the taxi ran last night? Tonight 077 is on the Navan Branch as is another 071 (Freight Livery) - I heard 072 mentioned but could be wrong....I suspect the taxi was either cancelled and ran up at 1700hrs today (Common) or it ran last night but only to Drogheda Navan Branch.

08x (99% it was 086 but was just too far to make out the no properly it had at least one orange door) just passed Sallins for Dublin port on IWT.

Whats the purpose of a Taxi loco? Crew relocation?

It swaps the loco (if needed) on the tara duty over the weekend and also gets a Dundalk driver back to Dundalk after working a southbound train. It has been known to taxi the driver by road and send the 071 to Drogheda on a Sunday afternoon instead.

does anyone have an updated status of all the class 071 which have been withdrawn, lying to rot , in service , awaiting parts?

071 underwent a big overhaul during the winter, it has been painted into the new livery and is due to return to service shortly.

078 is next to be released to service after 071 after a major overhaul and repaint.

087 is in Inchicore waiting for it's big overhaul and repaint.

084 is still in IE orange going around, expected next in for overhaul.

085 is confined to Inchicore works as a pilot loco.

The rest of the fleet as still all active.

071s faring alot better than their 201 counterparts. shocking when you see the long line of 201s when passing inchicore lying to rot...no matter how troublesome and inadequate they were for an irish railway

072 just passed Sallins for Dublin port on IWT duty. Another 071 class in freight livery passed light for Dublin about 10:30 but I didn't catch it's number.

Is it mandatory to sound the horn passing through a station or just courtesy?

Any time a train approaches anywhere that there may be people around then the horn is blown. This narmally means stations, level crossings, freight yards (Don't laugh), working sidings, workmen on the track and if there are crossing trains en route.
