    where can i learn what these icons mean (usually envelopes with arrows)

    Just hover the mouse over one for a few seconds. The definitions are also listed at the bottom of the page.

    doing this just shows [dots][hot]. what does this mean?
    and there are'nt definitions at the bottom of forum page that i can see.

    It means it's a hot topic, that's all.

    The definitions should be on the lower left of the forum (not a thread).
